Why wouldn't they want Benanti? I loved LuPone, but Benanti was the most moving thing about that production.

I don't know! There was an interview a few months ago where Arthur Laurents said that they only want him and Patti. I don't know if he literally meant London producers weren't interested in Laura and Boyd, or if London producers only want Laurents' production with Patti. I think it'd be ideal if Patti, Laura and Boyd could all go with the show to London.
When I see the phrase "the ____ estate", I imagine a vast mansion in the country full of monocled men and high-collared women receiving letters about productions across the country and doing spit-takes at whatever they contain.

It seems like the kind of comment Laurents makes to intentionally exclude people or be hurtful--I'd bet the intention was to indicate that Laura and Boyd weren't wanted.

It seems to me that it is just Patti's personality to air dirty laundry to anyone who will listen. I find it pretty tasteless of her to bring up Bernadette's name at all in reference to fighting for the part in Annie Get Your Gun. I'm sure Bernadette would have loved to have played Mrs. Lovett in the 2006 Sweeney revival but we don't hear her suggesting that Patti stole a part from her. Bernadette replaced Catherine Zeta-Jones for goodness sake and I'm sure that to Patti, to replace a movie star would be unthinkable.

I don't think she brings up things like Annie Get Your Gun and Gypsy because she's got a problem with *Bernadette*. I think she's just honest about how tough the business is, especially when it comes to being passed over for parts she really would love to do.

It was due in at The Shaftesbury Theatre in London to cover when Hairspray closed and Flashdance began... but it all fell apart due to timings on Patti's side and few fall outs.
David Ian Productions still hope to bring it in if the time when all can work together (Arthur/Patti/Producers) comes up, which they hope will happen at some point in 2011.
It will only be for a limited season.

They obviously both had their cars there; should he have left his behind? Should she have made him drive her back to the first bar?
Where is all this Bernadette animosity folks keep talking about? All I saw in the article was a mention that Bernadette had gotten the billing that, apparently, was the sticking point in Patti's playing the Witch.

I think Betty Buckley, Judy Kuhn, or, say, Lea Salonga have more to bitch about than LuPone as far as the opportunities they've received on Broadway go.

As a fellow Sicilian, i can relate to Patti's 'festering'. lol
But to be fair, she's being interviewed for her upcoming memoir. Of course, she will be asked to reflect on certain things in her past - the good, the bad and the ugly. Although, the Kevin Kline thing was a little creepy. He's married, you're married. Let it go.

Having worked with Patti in ANYTHING GOES, and I really like her, but she is a very difficult person. She takes everything personally, and has no sense of humor about herself. She always refers to herself as a "star", and I have found with lots of the wonderful ladies that I have had the fortune to work with, she is the only one who ever referred to themselves in that way. She is brilliantly talented, but she has definitely caused some of the problems that has made her career difficult.

Patti needs to find peace and some closure with some of her "misfortunes". Yes, she's had her share of professional disappointments...even outright public humiliations, like the SUNSET BOULEVARD debacle. I don't think she has. You would think that by writing her memoirs it would have helped her make peace with it all. Compared to many she's lived a charmed life.
But then she is human and people deal with things in very different ways. I'm not getting the Kevin Kline gripe though. That was a very long time ago.
I totally don't agree with having that reporter driving while under the influence, though. Not cool at all. They're both irresponsible in that respect. He really shouldn't have mentioned that in his article.

I'm kind of like Lupone in that if something truly awful happened to me, any mention of it or memory would send me "back" and thus ranting would ensue.
I don't think she *thinks* like a 'star.' Or thinks of herself that way. When she doesn't get a part, I think it's Lupone feeling disappointed that she didn't get the part and not Lupone, the DIVA, feeling outraged she didn't get what she wants, as people assume.
I don't think there's anything strange about still mentioning past hurtful experiences. I don't know of anyone who lets go of things without some closure. And it certainly seems those things she brings up time and time again are brought up because she doesn't feel they've been resolved. It's a better attitude than pretending they never happened and moving on via denial. You go Patti.

I'm sorry you had a negative experience working with Patti in ANYTHING GOES. I worked with her on several projects in the mid to late '90's and found her much tougher on herself than she is on other people. She is generous, funny, and the utmost professional.
Wasn't everyone a little bit crazy in the '80's? I'd like to believe (and my experience tells me...) that she has changed a lot since those ANYTHING GOES days, when her "bad reputation" started...
