I was just thinking there should be a category for best Understudy/Standby. I know for the men, my vote would go to Barret Foa.

I'm sure Mr. Shaiman will get right on it along with Best Chorus Boy in a Musical!

It's hard enough to get the 725 voters to see all the nominated shows with their original casts ONCE, how on earth could you get them to see every understudy and standby (considering they would usually be going on with little advance notice) in all of those shows? Not to mention many understudies never get to go on at all, especially in the first six months to a year of a show. No way you could have a category for it.

Such a category is impossible to administer. Voters have enough trouble getting to the eligible new shows, let alone going back to see the 18th Phantom, the 23rd Cogsworth, the 35th Scar, etc...

How could you judge "best stage technician?" Sitting in the audience, how could anybody determine that?

I think they should have a Best Replacement catagory. There are so many talented people who didnt originate a role that should be acknowledged.

Again, many of the voters barely have enough time to see the new shows, let alone go see 'Chicago' every three months when they bring in a new Roxie.
Really, awards like that, at least from the Tony's, aren't remotely plausible.

ROTFLMAO JohnPopa!!! I could take Chicago on my own.... sadly, only in the past months have I not seen the new people in each role. Though at the same time, it shows I have a life lol

i've always thought they should have a category for Best Male/Female Vocal Performance in a Musical. this would be in addition to Best Actor and would potentially nominate leads, supporting roles, featured soloists, any role in which the performer displays award-worthy vocals. this way they can still award Best Leading Performer to folks like John Lithgow and Harvey Fierstein when appropriate, without overlooking those musical performers who can actually sing. of course, it would have to be new shows only just like all the awards.

I also think they should have a best chorus award. So many times a chorus either makes or breaks a show. They hold it together and have such a thankless job.

I think song is a good one, but I would have to go with best ensemble. As someone else said, it can make or break a show, and it doesn't require the tony voters to go back to a show more than once. Sometimes it's the way that the actors work TOGETHER and the chemistry that they have that really makes the show stands out.

Not sure how they chose whom to award, but award they did, from 1950 through 1963.
Looks like the last "Best Stage Technician" was one Solly Pernick for MR. PRESIDENT, who won over fellow nominee and brother Milton Smith nominated for BEYOND THE FRINGE.

They could make it just for understudies for leading roles. Do some sort of concert competition where all the major understudies/standbys perform for the Tony presenters/other audience and donate procedes to something like Equity Fights Aids. Kind of like the Super Bowl of Understudies.

They should add:
Best Scene in a Play (hey, if we're going to dissect a show into 'best song' why not award individual scenes in plays?)
Best Transitional Underscoring in a New Musical (because there's more to scoring a musical than just the songs.)
Best Performance By A Stand-By Who's Never Actually Gone On (Just because they haven't performed they shouldn't be ignored by the voters.)
Best Diction (there's more to singing and speaking onstage than just knowing one's lines, one must be able to be understood.)
Best Scene in a Play (hey, if we're going to dissect a show into 'best song' why not award individual scenes in plays?)

I've always thought there should be a best vocalist (male and female, of course).
