If you're looking to live in a black and white world, I'm sorry to be the one to tell you that life is nothing but shades of grey...
It's the exact same thing.
How can you post that it takes common sense judgement and then argue that you don't care that you are willfully breaking the law? If you break that law (and knowingly do so) you can't expect NOT to deal with the consequences. You may get caught and if you are, you may or may not be "reprimanded" for it.
Same thing here.. Thousands of posters post daily and they use their best judgement. Sometimes they are wrong - and their posts are subsequently deleted. It's no different when posting links to material which can also break those guidelines
I'm sure you are a lot of fun at parties to argue or discuss issue with, but you'd never make it as a laywer.

Im not saying that I or anyone else would break the law willingly, but I think it is a lot to ask a poster to decide on the legality of a clip on youtube without knowing anything under what circumstances they were obtained.
A lot of clips are purposely put out by the copyright holders in an attempt at "viral marketing"
Many companies are in partnership with youtube and their materials are just fine for youtube, but otherwise would look as if they were copyrighted material.
By asking the posters to use the "if in doubt, don't post it" method, without explaining how you, the moderators, would decide if the clip is copyrighted or not.
Would you automatically assume it is copyrighted material if it looks professionally shot?
Do you do research or just pull a link that another member says is copyrighted but provides no proof that it's existence on youtube is not legal?
What if the clip on youtube is made without copyright attachments, but includes clips that are allowed under Fair use policies? is BWW prepared to do the legwork necessary to find out the specific on each link that is posted, or are you going to follow your own advice and just remove it if you even think it might be copyrighted material.
Imagine if cops went around arresting people they thought might committ a crime.
Or more realistically, imagine an usher who kicks people out of the theater if he thinks they might take pictures or eat noisy candy or sing along?

Ah, what would the board be without the invaluable contributions of neddyfrank?

Fenchurch if you're that worried just DON"T POST ANY LINKS. The rest of us, on the other hand, will use common sense
J'ai compris tous les mots, j'ai bien compris, merci.............

I don't think he's worried, just curious. Besides, the vast majority of links that have been posted since the ban was lifted clearly haven't used common sense.

And that's exactly the problem. The majority of such links have always been and always will be posted by the board members least inclined (or least able) to use any common sense. I frankly don't know why the ban was lifted at all. It simply opes the window to our least knowledgeable and least mature posters to add links to materials that are almost certain to be deleted.

"I frankly don't know why the ban was lifted at all."
Why was the ban lifted if all YouTube videos link to illegal material (for example, what you see on the sides)? Sometimes one can post a commercial for a specific Broadway show, and on the side will be illegaly taped clips from the show. If you want us to use our "best judgement" then, if that is the case, then wouldn't our "best judgement" be not to post any YouTube material at all? Thus, wouldn't it make sense to just ban all YouTube material from being posted all together?

I think I've answered my own question. I'm going to call it the "Happy Birthday" clause. You know those copyright holders keep such a tight leash on that song (which is why people often inexplicably sing "For He's a Jolly Good Fellow" in films and tv shows when its someone's birthday) and it lasts like what, 30 seconds or so? I would guess that it would be a violation to post any material that has a copyrighted song in it, whether that song is being sung by someone in the clip or if the song is just used in the background.

Perfect example, Kringas.
But those rules, you would get punished if you posted a home video of a birthday party where someone sang Happy Birthday.
And how ridiculous is that?
But if I posted a youtube video of myself singing the National Anthem (which is totally out there), that would be just fine, right?

Seems pretty clear to me, that that's EXACTLY how it works. Hooray, Fenchurch, you finally got it, with Kringas' help!
BWW lightened up on its original policy, and you're giving Craig a hard time for it? It would serve you right if they decide to go back to the old one, then. Craig was (and seriously, you've been posting since Nov and you don't know who he is?) simply announcing BWW's disclaimer. Any doubt whether it's copyrighted or not? DON'T post it.

Ghostlight, one of my original posts was that the policy would be better if they just left it as banning Youtube altogether.
It might as well be the same thing. My point is that it looks like Craig and the gang are doing something magnanimous, but they're not. Actually they are making more work for them, as they now have to comb through all the links and make decisions about whether or not to take them off. The problem is that they aren't giving their criteria for whether or not something is allowed, but they are issuing penalties and warnings for unauthorized content, so what they are doing is extending their policy of removing whatever they want without notice or reason to youtube links.
So let's say I made a home video of myself reciting all my problems with BWW's youtube policy and posted the link up on youtube, they could take the link down without any notice or explanation because they never gave any criteria for their system, even though nothing about my video was copyright protected.

So, if I am correct, that means that pretty much every link that's been posted since the ban is a copyright violation. And there's no saying that I'm actually correct or not. I never got an answer on the board or via PM, so I just made my own guesses.
I don't get why people are being so bitchy to Fenchurch.
At any rate, it's a youtube free for all on the boards now.

Got to assume you've got a lot of time on your hands, there, Fenchurch. I read your deleted posts. I'd guess they were deleted because they were reduntantly argumentitive. While clearly it would be better for *you* if Youtube were banned, not everyone feels the same way. (I have never posted anything from the site, btw, and couldn't care less about this issue. I just find it annoying that you're hassling this guy for no apparant good reason).
"Well Craig, from the looks of it, you answered your own question, you don't champion free speech or democracry, your track record on deleting posts for no reason shows that. You must save a lot of heat bills what with burning books to keep warm and all."
You're talking out of both sides of your mouth with that one, Fenchurch. Not everyone feels the need to have big brother dictate their behavior to them, and I'm honestly confused why you're so obviously attacking Craig for giving you a choice as to whether to post or not post links, as opposed to simply saying "you can't", thus taking the decision entirely out of your hands, while at the same time, attacking him in a most hyperbolic fashion, comparing him to book burners.
Make up your mind, kiddo.
It's their rules. They don't have to give you a reason (says so in the rules, for the love of all that's holy!). You don't like it? Take your ball, go home, and start yer own website.

It's actually not more work. It's the same work - because with or without the restriction, people were still posting at will whatever they wanted. The difference is now, those that post links to material that doesn't violate copyright laws can share videos with each other that they find interesting.
As for the rest of your diatribe, I'm chosing not to respond because it's simply ridiculous.
BroadwayWorld probably has one of the most relaxed posting policies out there while still maintaining decorum. We are so incredibly far from being a dictatorship or crazy with censorship. We even opened up an off-topic message board on this theater site to offer another way people could talk about issues which they were interested in aside from the arts.
I can ammend my earlier statement - of the thousands that post here, 3 people (maybe as many as 5?) are the only ones taking an issue with this. Again - if YOU are unclear what's allowed and what's not - then simply don't post YouTube links.
You really only have to worry about yourself...

Now that certain folk no longer moderate, I would somewhat agree with that statement.
