bundy5...good list, Working Girl would really work and I can't believe it hasn't been done. I bet someone has a treatment somewhere.
Groundhog Day could be great musical comedy, someone needs to write that. Now!

The Crucible: The Musical!!!!! Featuring the world-famous, tap-dancin' Puritans!
I love it! It could be done in the vaudeville style of "Chicago!" The best part is that the Puritans had a strict ban on theatre, didn't they?

1984 will never be done - or at least not until it's in the public domain. For my college thesis paper I actually wrote an entire libretto for a treatment of 1984 as a musical. While that came out fairly well, I found out from my research (this was ten years ago now) that many many people (if I remember right including Sondheim and Kander and Ebb) had tried to get the rights to do the book as a musical, but the Orwell estate will not allow it to be done.
So, my work was done purely academically, but hey, I got an A on it :)

There already is a Casper musical.
Sondheim was tinkering with a Groundhog Day musical, but he abandoned it.

I was watching a film about 7-8 years ago, I really enjoyed it, got me thinking that this would work on stage well, had emotion about a child losing his mother, conflict with strikes and dancing, which always goes down well in theatre, the name of the film escapes me..............hang on, yeah that's right the film was called Billy Elliot, think it is fair to say the rest is history.
Always thought Moulin Rouge would kinda work though!

She was THRILLED when she found out they were making one-- she keeps saying, "Did you know that they're making a musical of Legally Blonde?" I don't quite have the heart to tell her that it closed on Broadway and the tour just left our town!

My parents tried to buy our family tickets for Christmas (for the tour), but they were sold out.
I'm not a huge fan of the show, but my brother's obsessed.

Memoirs of a Geisha, if it had the right composer (Adam Guettel?).
And a musical based on Arthur Rimbaud's life, inluding his relationship with Paul Verlaine (Just NOT a Total Eclipse adaptation).

Posted: 1/28/09 at 9:30amYou know, I was just thinking about a "Great Gatsby" musical last night. If anything fits the format of a musical, it's that-- the writing is so lyrical, too. But I'd worry that the musical would be terrible... there are SO many things they could do wrong with it.

Moulin Rouge is currently touring in Germany under the title La Belle Bizarre du Moulin Rouge. The cast recording is now available.
