Posted: 11/10/05 at 8:57pmIt's called Wicked: With a Twist. They're semi rewriting the script, and there's no publicity, except among some Jewish groups. Is that still illegal?

to rewrite the script? Illegal as hell, Wicked is Wicked. If they are doing none of the music then they still would still owe royalties to Gregory Maguire.
Just out of curiosity, what did you end up doing? Did you call the principal?
edited because I worded that wrong...lol

Posted: 11/10/05 at 9:05pmIsn't it legal if they do a parody of sorts? Poetic license? Updated On: 11/10/05 at 09:05 PM

Posted: 11/10/05 at 9:06pmEven if it's "with a twist," they're still using the characters and those are copyrighted too. If Wicked couldn't even use "Toto" in their show, then your friend playing "Boq" is still copyright infringement.

Marlene, you still have to have permission to do a parody of the material.
And the music is already available, so that's probably where this all started.

Posted: 11/10/05 at 9:45pmBut isn't there a limit to hoe many songs can be performed?
#9re: News About Wicked: The School's Statement
Posted: 11/10/05 at 9:47pmI think it's 4-ish songs that are allowed, and I'm not sure if all the songs are available, or only some of the more "popular" ones.

If you do any more than ONE song from a show, you have to pay royalties for the entire show. And since the rights for Wicked are not available yet, I guess they will have to wait like everyone else.
I know this because I have put together several musical reviews...and learned the hard way.

Posted: 11/10/05 at 9:59pmJust out of curiousity, do you have to pay if it's a melody? I think we were going to sing a melody that we created ourselves of Wicked songs...

Posted: 11/10/05 at 10:00pmGood thinking! Say, the rights to The Wizard of OZ are available! Maybe you could do that one!

korenglish:
I think you're safe if you pay for all copies (don't photocopy) of the music you use. And don't do more than one song in its entirety. (I think you meant "Medley")

Posted: 11/10/05 at 10:07pmWouldn't it even be illegal to call it "Wicked: With a Twist" without paying royalties? The whole thing reeks. The teacher should know better. It sounds like they are trying to bend the rules to suit their production.

And they're trying to justify it to My Fair Lady, thinking she won't know any better. But MFL, you are smarter than that!
The whole situation is shady enough for you to warrant a report. If it turns out to be okay, the Wicked people can just let it drop without incident. But something about this just doesn't sound right and they should at least look into it.

*sighs* Why. MUST. They. Do. Wicked????!
The rights aren't out yet. Periodendofstory. Even if they called it: "Wicked.. But Not Really Even Close So Don't Worry About Reporting Us" it would still be illegal.
