Hmmmm....maybe because it was a huge flop that was hated by audiences and critics alike? And since Disney has the rights to HUNDREDS of properties that are beloved and popular with audiences they are probably going to develop those first.
It's Douglas Carter Beane's next project
... kidding

Which is too bad. Newsies has a theatricality that none of Disneys other properties has. I'm sick of the theme park shows they keep producing on Broadway, and I really hope that Little Mermaid flops. If that happens, I think we'll see the end of Disney's days as a producer. I wouldn't object if they pumped money into real projects, instead of exploiting Disney cartoons for money.
I didn't realize you hated theater that much Fosse. I'm kind of shocked.
You hope a show flops? You hope that Disney stops producing?
A bit harsh if you ask me.
They ARE pumping money into projects not based on their animated library. Many are in the works. Fan or not, Aida and King David were also not from their animated works. So it's not like they are ONLY investing in those types of projects.

First off, Little Mermaid will most likely end up doing very well, being one of Disneys most cherished and popular properties.
Secondly, the way Disney Theatricals works is literally like this: Tom Shumacher prepares a budget, sends it to Disney, and he gives a little presentation and they hand him over a $20 million dolar check from the billions and billions of dollars in the Disney vault (right next to Walt himself, wink wink).
Even is Mermaid did flop, Disney will NEVER not be present on Broadway from now on one way or another, especially since they own a Broadway house.
I hear NAMBLA is getting a producers circle going. Casting, however, has already started.

I thought the next Broadway revival of Oliver! was NAMBLA's first project.
Who are your sources?
Hmmmm....maybe because it was a huge flop that was hated by audiences and critics alike?
Yeah THEN in 1992, but now it has a HUGE 10 year reinging cult following on the internet and gaining more fans every day(because the movie practically is teenybopper eye candy), and what money its lost it more than made up for in DVD sales(it's one of the top ten selling Disney DVDS)
It has great potential, especially if they use one of the original scripts and add the deleted scenes and songs.(the original script was rather well developed than the the movie's script)
I wouldn't be too quick to judge with Newsies.

I've always thought Newsies would work quite well on stage. It's unfortunate that it was a flop. It came out when movie musicals weren't so popular. If it had come out today, it probably would have gotten a better response. It's leagues above HSM in quality.
the score is actually quite good. The story, not so much. The direction, terrible... A guy sings, uses the dance break to ride a horse, and then stops riding it....
All I can say is, it would need much reworking, but the score is quite good.
I can never tell if people hate Menken as much as they hate Disney or if the two are separate?

Where did I say I hate theatre? I love how people will defend Disney by calling nayseyers theatre-haters, or regurgitating the same old tired line about employing actors, who have chosen a profession they KNOW isn't stable. It's the equivalent of Conservatives calling war critics unpatriotic. It's rude and uncalled for and 99.99900837% incorrect.

Yup, I sure do. I don't care how many jobs they have created. Sweat shops create jobs too you know. That doesn't mean we should keep them in business.
"A bit harsh if you ask me."
Considering the crap they spew, I think not.

The only ones that are even remotely viable and have ever seen the light of day are the same crappy theme park shows they keep producing. Aida was horrible, but I would rather they produced and supported more independent artists and shows instead of "creating" the pop-culture trash that they dump on us.
