I would like to see SPEECH & DEBATE transfer to a Broadway house! though it may lose the appeal being in a "classroom" setting & the intimacy of the play (actors not mic'd)

I've heard from the higher-ups at both 2ST and Circle that they are both pushing for the transfer, pending the reception of the show at 2ST. 2ST has been looking for a Broadway transfer since Little Dog closed, and Circle has a working relationship with 2ST. I was lucky enough to see a reading of the show (with changes since "Feeling Electric") before rehearsals began, and the show is good, just very dark, and, frankly, depressing. But, time will tell how the show is received and if Circle's owners will continue to court 2ST for the transfer. Ticket sales have been brisk, due to the power that is A. Ripley and B. Darcy James. That and involvement from a certain Rent alumnus.

Did you happen to see Feeling Electric at NYMF? Could you make any comments on the changes that have been made since then?

I'm sure ticket sales are brisk, but Alice Ripley, Brian d'Arcy James, (and even Anthony Rapp) are hardly box office names.

It's way too dark and depressing for mainstream audiences.

Anthony Rapp is in NEXT TO NORMAL?

He's been associated with it for the longest time. While he's not in the 2nd Stage cast, it wouldn't surprise me if they find a way to give him a cameo.

Oh, cool. Why is he not going to be in the 2ST run?

I believe Rapp is the assistant director.

I'm also curious about any specifics on changes that were made to Next to Normal since it was... Feeling Electric at NYMF. I'd imagine a fair amount has been changed but... if anybody has any details.. please share!

Now what would you say if today I started over? Without a thing but this taped together four leaf clover And I'll pretend like everything is already alright And I'll run toward the sun till the castle's out of sight

I unfortunately did not catch Feeling Electric, and as such can't really comment on the changes. Anthony Rapp is assistant directing, but he's not being publicized as such. I think a lot of the ticket business is coming from musical theatre fans and just the general public expecting the next Rent or SA.

I saw Next to normal and it is outstanding. It is the PERFECT choice to be transfered to broadway. I heard it was supposed to go to circle in the square. I didnt hear anything about Speech and Debate going there but i did hear about Next to normal transfering.

It is the best show BY FAR of this season. Also, probobly my favorite show EVER.

If They Move To Broadway the Tony Awards they will most likely win...

Alice Ripley-Best Actress
Best Book of a Musical
Jen Damiano-Best Supporting Actress in a Musical
Brian D'Arcy James-Best Supporting Actor in a Musical
Kevin Adams-Best Lighting Design in a Musical
and...
Hopefully Best Musical

You know, I would really love to see a production of Zanna, Don't play the Circle in the Square. I feel like that show would work REALLY well in that space, and it's definitely got a story and a score that should be heard by a wider audience.

Maybe a new cast though? Not the off-Broadway cast? I'd love to see Danny Calvert play Zanna again, he was FABULOUS in L.A., and the Kate in Los Angeles, Rebecca Johnson, I believe? was also brilliant. Enrico Rodriguez should make a comeback as Mike, but only if Dan Pacheco (from the L.A. cast) could understudy him. They were both so great in such different ways. Anyway, I'm just saying, I think that show could do very well with a well-promoted and well-casted run at the Circle in the Square.

A Broadway production of Zanna won't happen, as much as I'd love it. Updated On: 1/21/08 at 03:06 PM

Actorman, no best score for N2N? What do you think would win instead?

I think d'Arcy James would be in the Best Actor category, not featured.

bare would be my first choice to transfer... hell, I just want it back in New York. I was heartbroken when the 2004 transfer didn't happen.

nick - I'm assuming from your name that you played Jason? Your production was pretty good, but (no offense) nowhere near good enough to be produced professionally.

I'm seeing Next To Normal next weekend, and I'm sure that when it's over I will be DYING for it to be transfered. I've been obsessed with the Feeling Electric audio for the longest time! haha

and um... Bare. PLEASE let it come back and be transfered. PLEASE. I just discovered it a couple of days ago, and it's pretty much been the only thing I've been listening to since. And it's just such an important, poignant, well written story too.

I don't need a life that's normal. That's way too far away. But something next to normal would be okay. Something next to normal is what I'd like to try. Close enough to normal to get by.
