Nice Work

I got to see Nice Work If You Can Get It on Saturday. I must say I LOVED it. It has a great cast, the music is good, and the costumes and set are amazing. The only thing I wish they did differently was cast someone other than Broderick in the role of Jimmy. I know they wanted the name but he just seemed like he was stumbling through the performance. Anyone else think so too? O'Hara was amazing, as was JLT, Judy Kaye and the other supporting cast. Everyone had such energy (sans Broderick). If you are NY and like Gershwin music, or are looking for a traditional musical I would HIGHLY recommend seeing this great show.

Why all the hatred for Matthew on this board?? He might not be your ideal song and dance man but he actually did a decent job in Nice Work. C'mon give the guy a break.

It should have been an easy tony for Broderick

Nice Work is wonderful! And so was Matthew, I thought he did a great job and deserved a Tony for his work. He was fabulous in this show the night I saw him.

I had reservations about Broderick but ended up really liking him in the role.

I liked Matthew Broderick in the role as well. I found him quite charming.

Charming he may be, but there is still that whole satanic ritual/dead babies PR debacle he has to overcome.

Charleisgirl, I saw the show 3 months ago and thought the same about Broderick. Hoped it was an off night, but guess not.

Matthew was a dead weight that brought the show down every time he walked onstage. I can't wait to see Will Chase in the role. I bet Kelli can't either

I just saw Nice Work this afternoon and Jeffrey Schecter was the u/s for Michael McGrath. I was disappointed until I saw his performance----VERY good! His acting, movements, facial expressions were perfect! I also loved Judy Kaye's performance---she never fails to entertain! (IMO)
I liked Matthew Broderick---I could see why some thought it wasn't very energetic, but it was a sweet charm that seemed to work for me and much of the audience. I enjoyed ACT II even more than Act I---very good experience!

Too bad you didn't get to see Michael McGrath, Justafan, he is truly great in the role. I'm glad to see Schecky get a chance though. The ensemble of this show is just so talented.

I will once again throw support to Broderick since he gets almost none on this board. This show is geared around his performance. It is a performance of controlled comedy which makes all the madcap stuff around him work. I've seen this show a few times now and there hasn't been a performance of his that hasn't worked or drawn a tremendous response from the audience. He makes the character likeable which is necessary for this show to work. Harry Connick, while a much better singer, could never have pulled this off the same way and come out of it being so likeable. Will Chase will do well with the singing also, but the comedy and charm is uniquely Broderick.

I would've loved to see Jeffery Schecter as Cookie!

McGrath was amazing, his chemistry with Kaye stole the show. Robyn Hurder was hilarious also, she reminded me so much of Sara Ramirez on stage, not so much in person. I'll agree the Broderick gave a certain charm to Jimmy, maybe I just needed to see it again (oh how I wanted to). I'm curious what people will say about Will in the role.

i wanted to like broderick in the show but all the incredible singing and dancing talent around him made it all worse. i could see they were going for cool and suave but it just isn't working.
my friend remarked that the show's poster has it right, kelli ohara is carrying matthew. dont want to be rude but it was kind of true.

I think they were going for offbeat comic charm with Broderick. The type of sheltered rich boy who does need to be carried by his doll. Chase is more in the typical suave playboy mold who would not be likely to generate an illustration where he's being carried by the woman.

It's Matthew Broderick being Matthew Broderick and no one does Matthew Broderick better than Matthew Broderick. I think that was the intention of the director and the actor.

Either you like his schtick or you don't. I happen to love it. I liked the way he played the ennui of the character.

The people who complain about Broderick are usually same ones who jizz or wet themselves over Kristin Chenoweth's schtick.

Great point Chris...I can't imagine how Estelle's role plays against Will Chase. the show is written as the main character is a dim witted mama's boy who is totally outsmarted by the women around him. How Chase fits that is hard to imagine. I wish I could see him before he ends tomorrow but sadly, I can't. I have no doubt he pulled off the singing and dancing very well.

Having seen the show a few times, I totally enjoy the show with Broderick in it and it's very safe to say that this show got off the ground and continues to draw because of Broderick's participation, something that often gets overlooked here.
