Posted: 12/15/11 at 3:21pmWho is the fourth phantom singer? (The one who sings 'The phantom of the opera is there inside your mind' the first time) His voice is amazing.

Earl Carpenter. <3
He also played the Bishop in the Les Miz 25th anniversary concert, and the Auctioneer in the Phantom 25th anniversary non-concert.

I'm quite impressed, there is alot of talk about her miming the last part, I have no doubt it is her voice, but she does seem to be miming the cadenza at the end, which is fine by me.
yup that other guy is Earl, I'm not a hige fan of his, saw him in the role twice and he strained in alot of the higher notes, I have heard he has since improved. The other guy there, Simon Bowman, he has a special part in my heart as the worst Phantom vocal I have ever had the pleasure of seeing live pluss he mixed up verses in some of the songs and fumbled lines along the way.

I'd read in the past that Nicole Scherzinger had some classical training under her belt but didn't get to see and her that part of her voice until now. I mean, c'mon, "Don't Cha" doesn't really give the girl a chance to show off her voice!
I saw some clips of her Maureen from "Rent" at The Hollywood Bowl and she was quite good there too. I'm truly impressed that Nicole was able to navigate the vocalise section of the song and sing the high E/E6.
These crossover things can be so interesting. Nicole's worked but lots of others fail: check out the Pavarotti and Friends clips on YouTube, for instance. Pavarotti and Sheryl Crow sang "La ci darem la mano" and it was a friggin' HOT MESS all around. Ditto on Sting and Angela Gheorghiu's version of the same duet. Similarly, not all classical/opera singers can sing other musical styles easily. Tatiana Troyanos's Anita in the Leonard Bernstein conducted recording of "West Side Story" comes to my mind immediately. It's so bizarre to hear a mezzo-soprano singing Anita. It sounded so off to me.
But back on topic, good for Nicole!

Posted: 12/15/11 at 5:49pmJust to add in, saw Earl's first performance back in the London production as The Phantom on Monday and he really was incredible, his venerability was beyond anything I had seen before. He is also the Javert on the Les Mis 25th Anniversary Tour CD.

I saw it yesterday, but I think I can understand what E.Davis means. I remember her having some difficulty traversing between her chest and head voice in the beginning. And she couldn't get low notes she'd normally be able to hit naked in a snow storm. But regardless, she sounded really nice with no hints of strain on her face.
Sexy enough for Velma or Reno, and "fierce" enough for Elphaba. Capable of vocally handling a role like Christine. I've always wondered where she'd fit on Broadway. . .

"Sick" as in "ill" or "sick" as in the slang use meaning "amazing" etc.?
The song itself spans a ridiculous range and I think those notes were just low for Nicole. When she sang on "X Factor" this past Wednesday, her low notes for her awful song "Pretty" sounded very similar to those in "Phantom."
I'm still impressed by the vocalise Nicole did. It was a strong sound and nicely in tune. Some Christines I've seen may hit the notes but their pitch is questionable.
