Posted: 6/8/05 at 10:42pmHas anyone ever been turned away by a box office for attempting to buy student rush without an actual student I.D.? I'm asking because I'm coming to the city with three other friends who don't have one and I'm worried we won't be able to student rush. All the theatres only sell two tickets per person so I'd need someone else to have one. Do you think we really need the card to get the tickets? Anyone?

Posted: 6/8/05 at 10:48pmSometimes you do, sometimes you don't I'mnot sure there's a definitive answer for this. Some check, some don't. I'm sure if they LOOK like they could be students, it really won't be a big deal.

At lincoln center for Piazza using the $20 student tix...the guy really examined my brothers ID...because he only had his 11th grade school ID, and then he was in 12th grade (so the years didn't match). After like 5 minutes he said well I'm sure your still in school. Made me a bit nervous though, not sure the story is that relevant unless your going to see Piazza

Posted: 6/8/05 at 11:34pmNot all rush policies are student only but those which are almost always check them so I wouldn't count on getting tickets that way if you don't have student I.D. There's a reason that shows do student rush so, frankly, you shouldn't be trying to get it if you aren't students. Try TKTS.

They've checked nearly every time I bought a ticket, so without an ID I'd say you might be in trouble. You might want to try lottery, SRO, TKTS or cheap tickets like the balcony at the Walter Kerr.

All four of us are students, except I'm currently the only one with an ID, which is bad in this case. Oh well. Looks like we'll be hitting up lotteries and SRO.

When I was in high school and came into the city I didn't have any kind of ID. I brought a report card and my license (to prove that the name on the report card was me) and most people thought that was fine.
HOWEVER. I tried to get tickets to Man of La Mancha like that and the woman REFUSED to sell me tickets without a real ID. She was awful.
But generally just bring some kind of paperwork or something that proves you're in school and I think you'll be fine.
Have fun!

Does anyone know if student rush only applies to high school and college students? Does it not work for anyone younger, like elementary or middle school students? I've always wondered that.

I think it counts as high school as well (I remember being a senior in high school and being told for some show that if I had an ID I could get student rush).
Back to the question...It seems for me, more often than not, I take out my ID and they never ask to see it. I don't think I'd take that chance just pulling out a credit card or something and hoping they didn't look to see what card you're pulling out, but...Hmmm. I think I'd try the report card/license thing. It's worth a shot, and if that falls through, you can always try a lotto or SRO. I'm sure you'll be able to find something.

Posted: 6/9/05 at 9:35amWe saw Piazza last weekend. As I was picking up the tix from the box office we saw two different people refused student rush because they didn't have ID. I know this applied to Piazza only, but wanted to offer my experience.

The policies vary considerably. Before I went to see Little Women, I asked about the student rush policy and was told there was a limit of two tickets per student and you had to have your ID. I had both my mother and my grandmother with me and went to the box office only expecting to get two tickets, if that (seeing as I forgot my student ID >.<). But the guy didn't even ask for my ID and I was able to get three tickets. So you never know.
I still wouldn't bank on it though.

Posted: 6/9/05 at 9:53amYeah, LCT seems particularly strict w/ their student tix. A friend of mine went w/ me to Piazza. She got there a few minutes before me (w/ ID in hand). The guy asked her if she was a full-time student and she said no, since she's not, and he refused her a ticket. Give me a break! We had to go recruit a Juilliard student to buy her a ticket on the street...though I must say it was worth it! We had lovely seats!!

Posted: 6/9/05 at 11:46amLincoln Center is very strict with their student policy, but in general most theatres aren't. A lot depends on how well the show is selling out. Little Women, Brooklyn and Good Vibrations never asked to see. I know that Doubt definately does. Also keep in mind, that as people have said, its not always "student" rush. Pillowman and Altar Boyz have what's called "youth rush."

Posted: 6/9/05 at 11:49amI believe they are the seats that weren't sold in advance. So you could basically be sitting anywhere.

Posted: 6/9/05 at 3:12pmI did student rush for Chicago with a friend bc her parents wanted to come and he didnt ask for id and sold us 4 tickets pretty much together. we were both coincidentally wearing our college sweatshirts which is maybe why, but for a show like Chicago i dont think they really check. When I went to see Sweet Charity some lady wanted one of us to use our id to buy a 3rd ticket for her and the ppl were pretty pissed but were gonna let us do it until the lady asked for it to be with the 2 her daughter already bought and then the lady said she;d never get seats together and that was the end of that

Posted: 6/9/05 at 3:21pmI did Sweet Charity rush two times and the 1st time, the guy really examined it like he looked at what school I go to, looked at my picture and then at me and he looked at it for a good 15-20 seconds. The 2nd time I did it, it was a girl and she looked at it for literally 1 second & then gave it back to me...

Posted: 6/9/05 at 4:09pmWhen I went to Sweet Charity yesterday afternoon and asked it they had student tickets and then asked for two. I put my ID through the window and the guy looked almost surprised... it was really strange. I think he thought I was giving a credit card to pay for them and he never even asked for the ID. His expression was amusing though.
