Would you be that interested were the subject of this thread not Michael Crawford?

It seems Michael Crawford isn't the only one with a BIG ego then?
But you didn't answer my question.

To Musetta 1957. Yes I would. Bashing performers seems to be a favorite pastime here, and I'm wondering what kind of knowledge lends itself to this behavior.

Please Musetta1957, you have to be careful with the members of The Cult of Emotive Fingers, they are a fragile bunch. Kate let's just say "I've been "Behind the Mask"..but you don't have to take anything I do or say seriously, just as you don't have to defend your beloved Michael like a pitbull, look he didn't get The Producers, big deal, it's not his "time".

OK, no more bantering for me. Not worth the time. It's nice that you have been "behind the mask". I would think being in the profession you would have alittle more respect for your peers. You may make it big someday, then the jealous little "wanna be's" can come after you with vicious remaks.
Anyone is entitled to opinions, but to state them as facts causes unnecessary hurt. And it may come back and bite you.

Look he didn't get The Producers, big deal,

Isn't this what I said in first post??????

:: slaps forehead:: And to think, I could be reading some kind of Off topic crap. Horrors! How wonderful to see this kind of disgustion is alive and well on the board. What a comfort to at least be “On topic” and to know everyone has their shirt on.

Oh, I know from firsthand experience. I never realized one could utilize Boardhost's "ban" button so quickly until about 2 years ago.

Just curious.....has anyone who has posted in this thread ever worked with Crawford or are the statements about his ego based on a gossip column (or two?)? "Everyone knows" is seldom the truth. I know people here have read things in gossip columns about other performers and have roundly rejected it. I am honestly wondering why there is the willingness to believe whatever is said about him and not about other stars. It seems that it becomes fashionable to diss certain performers and to revel in their mis-steps. Liza Minnelli gets more than her share of grief, and Bernadette Peters was the brunt of all manner of nasty speculation earlier this year. Neither has done anything so outrageously disgraceful to earn the scorn heaped on them. Nor has Mr. Crawford....he tried something different and it didn't work. Shows fail every year. Why all the glee over DOTV? Why does it matter so much (especially to those who profess no interest in him)?

I do not know Michael Crawford, and my only contact was to have a Playbill signed by him. I cannot speak to his professionalism because I have never worked with him but I am not willing to take the word of a columnist from the Post and his unnamed source either. I can speak to his performance in DOTV because I saw it. I actually liked DOTV but it was as much...or more...because of the sets, costumes, lighting, music and the fabulous cast as it was because of him. I didn't like it more because of him and I likely wouldn't have liked it less without him. Whatever changes he may have made to it did not ruin it for me at all. I do not think the show deserved the scorn heaped on it, and I have to wonder about that too, if those who are writing with such glee of it's demise saw it after it was "frozen" or if they are basing their opinions on previews (which I didn't see so I refrain from commenting on them). Or worse, based simply the gossip that is bandied about regarding it.

I really can't take the comments about his professionalism (or lack of it) seriously from people who haven't worked with him, nor can I take opinions about his talent (or lack of it) seriously from those who haven't seen him perform. And I apply those standards to comments made about every performer.

So, folks...give us the real scoop. What do YOU _really_ know?

And...I suspect I will get the "I'm entitled to my opinions" line back again. And I agree, everyone IS entitled to their opinions. Opinions without knowledge or experience, however, are just plain ignorant rantings and ought to be challenged.

I frankly don't care about his being a tinhorn diva.

I only know I cannot stand his arch and affected siging.

And that I howled with delight the first time I heard FORBIDDEN BROADWAY'S merry skewering the abovementioned: "Put On Your Phony Voice"!

"I saw Michael Crawford in Phantom, and in Dance of the Vampires and enjoyed him in both. I also know several people that have worked with him over the years, and I can tell you for a fact that he's a kind, gratious man who's earned every bit of that press through very hard work. I hope he finds another project soon. "

I agree!!!!!

Children, children, I go away for two days and when I come back you're all tearing each other apart over MC. Immature people get a kick over winding other people up. It's a form of bullying. The more reaction they get the more they do it!
Incidentally, Baz Thingy in the Mail used to wax lyrical about Michael and now, for some reason, takes any opportunity to snipe at him. Also Lee Evans is like Frank Spencer on speed, so it's more than possible that Michael DID refuse for that reason (and his friends should know - more than some showbiz hack I'd have thought). But don't take any notice of me. I'm nearly as ancient as Michael so I'll soon be well past my sell by date!

If the Crawfordies and the AntiCrawfordies could PLEASE stop their fighting and turning this board into a living breathing, thriving hell that is driving out the likes of LouW, perhaps they would allow me to DRAAAAAG this thread back on topic? May I? Thank you. So much.

I'm surprised and shocked that there has been no, and I mean zero, discussion of the mention of the name Lee Evans for the role of Leo Bloom in The Producers. Evans was Nathan Lane's co-star in the box office disappointment "Mousehunt," a comedy that Denis Leary called "%$#king hilarious." Perhaps people have never had the pleasure of attending a stand up comedy performance of Mr. Evans's as I have, but let me say he is one of the funniest comedians I have ever seen live. I recall worrying that I may pass out from lack of oxygen because he had me laughing for so long that I could not take a breath. This had never happened to me before.

For anybody to say they have a similar comedic style to Mr. Evans is for anybody to seriously flatter themselves.

That's certainly your right. I like the way he sings, get over it.

>And that I howled with delight the first time I heard >FORBIDDEN BROADWAY'S merry skewering the abovementioned: "Put >On Your Phony Voice"!

I've never understood this, is he supposed to sing like Corneilus Hackle for his entire career? Man went to classes and trained his voice. His voice changed as a result. I thought the song was funny, but it ment no more to me than; "Don't Cry For Me, Barbara Streisand!"

"been the same since Michael Crawford said no regarding performing at ALW's 50th birthday celebration. "
He was sick, thats why he said no.

"...people that have worked with Michael on his most recent concert tour and they came away with a great level of working and personal respect for him. Sure Dance of the Vampires flopped, but give the man a break."
I agree, from alot of posts on this thread, alot of people think hes a nice person. ahh Just give him a break!

#46The Producers - London's West-End
Posted: 11/6/03 at 7:43pm

As far as Michael Crawford goes I think he is a brilliant actor, singer and all round entertainer. I can't really comment on his last Broadway show as I did not see it but I'm sure he'll be back on top soon. I think that he should consider reprising his role as the "Phantom" on stage. I know a lot of people have cursed film makers for not casting him as the title role in the upcoming movie but maybe Michael Crawford did not want to do it. Anyway as far as casting news on London's West-End version of The Producers "I heard it through the grapevine" that Lee Evans (There's Something About Mary) is going to be playing the part of Leo Bloom. I hope so; he is a great comic and a brilliant actor. He spoke about it on television a couple of weeks ago and although he did not say for sure, I think it will happen. I also heard that Robert Lindsay was offered the part of Max Bialystock but I don’t think he is doing it. I think that once Nathan Lane has finished his reprise on Broadway he should head for London’s West-End. It would be great to reunite both Lane and Evans after they made the perfect comedy duo in the film “Mousehunt” I will defiantly be in London to see the show but I am going to come to New York next year and I am going to be on the phone at 5pm (Noon NY time) to get a ticket to see Nathan Lane and Matthew Brodderick on Broadway. I am a huge fan of both the show and the two actors. Thanks for reading. Please feel free to reply and rip my views to shreds...

No loss. I never liked him, especially after I heard he didn't like sharing the stage with Laurie Beechman when they appeared together with "The Music of ALW" at Radio City Music Hall some 10 years ago. I find his voice very unpleasant.
