No Tony Nod???

DANCES WITH PITCHFORKS tells the tale of John Flynn and the Gypsy diaries. Apparently, during the rehearsal process, he started sending some emails to friends of his about what it was like to work with Betty and Deborah (not all that flattering either). As we all know, the 'forward' button can be either your friend or foe. In this case, these emails started FLYING around the city. At the time, I was doing a show up in Boston and the director was being forwarded them. HILARIOUS!
After all this, he decided to put together a show based on his experience. It's absolutely genius.
Also would like to point out that Ms. Buckley missed nearly a week of performances in that very limited run. Makes Bernadette's absences seem trivial in comparison, doesn't it?

Posted: 12/8/04 at 2:24pmI was ONLY told about them. My director was (actually is) pretty well known in the industry and didn't feel it was right to pass them along.

Posted: 12/8/04 at 2:36pmDidn't Ellen "Paradise By The Dashboard Light" Foley play the Witch in L.A. before Bernadette....Funny, I always thought she won for Into The Woods....I always considered the Witch to be a lead role the way Shylock in The Merchant of Venice is a lead/featured role.

When the Tony Awards were telecast that year, Phylicia Rashad was the Witch at the time. Since then (suprisingly) I have seen four other productions and the witch has always been black. I thought it was kind-a cool.
Also-- I have heard they played it with a man as the witch. But that may have just been a "fringe show"

A man as the Witch??? I'm surprised Sondheim didnt try to shut it down...
There was a production of COMPANY here about a decade ago that changed all the characters into gay men. Mr. Sondheim shut it down.

Not that Mr. Sondheim needs me to do so, but he was actually all for Billy Porter playing the Witch in the 2001 revival. Apparently, James Lapine nixed that.
As for COMPANY, you have a show with one entire song based on the names of the wives. He is an absolute stickler (as he should be) that his lyrics be sung the way he wrote them.

On the opinion of it being more a supporting role, I'd have to agree.
But with Joanna Gleason, I... How can anyone deny her that award? That performance was absolutely flawless.
