Yes, it was because Peters was only in the show for a very short period of time. Looking back, I don't think that should have been an issue, but the nominations (and subsequent awards) should be based solely on performance quality. Yes, Joanna Gleason was absolutely perfect in that role (as was the rest of the cast), and in many respects she deserved that Tony. But one has to think about what would have happened if Peters was nominated.
And that's the first time I had heard about Betty Buckley. That would have been an interesting take on the Witch. Is she funny?

It came down to the fact that nominated her would have been sort of a lost cause because so many Tony voters wouldn't be able to see her perform. And perhaps some of the actual nominating commitee didn't see her, therefore really putting a strike against her (not personally, but just in the sense of that year's nominations).
However magical her performance was, just not enough people saw it and that is not at any fault of the production team or Ms. Peters. I blame Betty Buckley!! Just kidding!

Betty Buckley has a comedy gene like a box of rocks. That is to say zip, nix, nada, rien and nope.
I remember someone who worked the Royale BO when she did Song and Dance, and they were asked how she was. Their response, "OLD...." That show only ran 4-6 weeks after she took it over because the audiences who were buying tix at the point didn't know who the hell she was.
How many other people were offered that take-over job before her agent got a call?
As for Joanna Gleason in Into The Woods, this is a prime case of sheer force of talent turning a supporting role into a leading one. Same with Carole Shelley in The Elephant Man.

This was a great thread! I can't believe I just sat here and read the whole thing.
However, I have to say that although "Into the Woods" is more of an ensemble show and doesn't have a "lead," The Baker's Wife definitely is a "leading" role. I'd say the Baker, his wife, and the Witch are basically the three leads of the show, and should be considered in the leading category for awards. Cinderella could probably be considered in the "leading actress" category as well.
Very interesting to find out about the reason for Bernie not getting nommed though, as I had actually always wondered about that.

I'm glad there's actually a logical reason why she wasn't nominated, not just that people didn't like her in the role. That logical reason being that not enough people saw her in the role, and her nomination would have been wasted. Had she been in the show longer and had she been nominated in the supporting category, I'm certain she would have 3 awards now instead of 2. I still can't believe Judy Kaye won that award for PHANTOM...
But again, I say this all the time because it really bothers me: those who said something to the effect of, "oh, maybe she wasn't nominated because she had just been nominated and they wanted to give someone else a chance." That's ridiculous. I'm not saying that the committee and the voters DON'T think like that - some of them DO, and that's very sad, and the reason I've lost almost all of my faith in the Tony Awards. That's the same reason I've heard many people (and some Tony voters) say that's why they, or people they know, voted for Idina Menzel over anyone else. Two of them even told me that they know Tonya, Donna, and even Kristin's performances were more solid and "better," for the lack of a better word, but Idina didn't have one yet, and that's ultimately why some people voted for her. I think that's very, very sad.

Posted: 12/9/04 at 12:12amI honestly don't think Bernadette deserved to be nominated for ITW. Her singing was of course amazing, but I felt she over-acted. What really pisses me off is that she didn't win for Gypsy!

I'm not, I'm completely joking.
I completely agree with you about Bernadette and GYPSY - she deserved that award more than anyone else that year.
However, I disagree on INTO THE WOODS. She wasn't overacting...that's Idina Menzel. Bernadette peters is BRILLIANT in that role. Don't think I'm just obsessed with her - I think about her win for ANNIE GET YOUR GUN was a mistake - she was hardly amazing.
