My kids (twins) will turn 8 this Friday. So far they've seen The Sound of Music, Fiddler on the Roof, Damn Yankees, Honk, Big, Joseph...Dreamcoat, Beauty and the Beast, Seussical, West Side Story, Godspell, Lion King, and Hairspray. They sit through every show, enchanted. After Hairspray, they came home and were acting out the scenes. My daughter was re-casting the show with family and friends. I am all for getting kids to see theatre!!

My kids don't get to go to Broadway, but I do take them to see theatre here in town. I do carefully weigh which shows will keep my children's interest and not be distracting. However, my oldest daughter has been going to shows since she was 2 months old. We have an outdoor theatre that does musicals every summer and my husband usually does one of the shows. At 18 months old, she sat on my lap glued to "The Wiz" for 3 weeks worth of shows. At 2 years, she sang along with "Godspell" and at 3 1/2, she loved "Once On This Island." The outdoor theatre is great, because if the girls make noise, it's much less distracting than in a theatre and I can bring them to the back of the meadow to let them play if they need a chance. I'm not sure if my 2 year old will be as interested in Daddy's show this summer. She may have to stay home! But, my four year old can't wait to go "every night". As a parent who loves theatre, it's awesome to have kids who love it too!

I saw my first musical when I was 2. It was GUYS & DOLLS. I knew every word to every song by the time I was 3. JCS was also a favorite in my house. When I was 4, my brother (who was 6) and I choreographed JCS in my basement using legos, toy soldiers, Belle as Magdalene, an alien as Judas, BatMan as Puntious Pilot, etc. And we both knew all the words.
I think theatre is good for kids, if they can sit through it! Some annoying kids who are not interested at all make your theatre experience a disaster. When the kid starts to cry and kick your seat and say every 2 seconds "Mommy I have to go to the bathroom", etc., it's annoying.
And King Lear?? Ok- that's just weird.

I've seen Chitty in London a few times, and for the most part the kids were very well behaved.
I can't imagine why any parent would take their child to see King Lear -- unless they were hoping the kids would be bored into sleep.
