oh this is gonna get lots of attention...
Fiyero is quite possibly the most under developed characters I've seen. Norbert is a great talent as we can see from "the last 5 years" and I'm sure he's done all he could with the paper-thin role of Fiyero.
Yes, I am a Wicked fan, but I'm not oblivious to the major holes and weaknesses of the plot and score. Many underdeveloped characters, irrelevant songs, and weak songs all together show examples of the creative difficulties of this show. I loved the overall message, and a few of the songs I really loved. Though I do really like this show, its impossible to deny its weaknesses and creative difficulties.

Posted: 6/26/04 at 6:03pmI like Norbert, and he was pretty good in the Wicked soundtrack (I have never seen the show), but in "The Last Five Years" his vibrato is wacky. I like that musical, but both Norbert and Sherie Rene Scott, who are both great, are kind of weak in "Five Years." I don't know. I might be the only one to think that.

Posted: 6/26/04 at 6:08pmNorbert is great, but it is a shame that, as aspringuy said, his character in WICKED is so under developed. He's better off moving into a show of his own.

Posted: 6/26/04 at 7:08pmI like Norbert, especially on the Last 5 Years recording. I think he's much better on that than the Wicked recording (although he isn't given much singing there). I'm happy he is leaving Wicked and moving on to Dirty Rotten Scoundrels. Now THAT I'm excited for.

Posted: 6/26/04 at 10:41pmI don't really understand why they casted Norbert. I mean, don't get me wrong, he's very talented, but Fiyero's supposed to be black. It's one of the things Elphaba relates to him with in the book because they're both more or less vitcims of racism.

Posted: 6/26/04 at 10:51pmWell, I think they didn't need him to be black in the show because they changed the character of Fiyero entirely. In the book, he is more resonsible and is married; in the show, he is a partyboy. They didn't really have the victim thing in common in the show, which shows why Fiyero is such a poorly-developed character. In the book, I think Elphaba and Fiyero's relationship was a lot more interesting.

Yes, broadwaystar, but Fiyero's character in the novel is VERY different, in more ways than just race. In the musical, Fiyero hasn't got much to him. In the musical, he's pretty shallow, but in the book he has a lot more depth, but that causes him to get caught up in all of that political turmoil. Every time people ask about the book, I say that it has a lot of darker, deeper elements that probably wouldn't bode well for a musical these days. I think it's like that. When I saw the show, I had just finished the book, and I felt like making Fiyero more shallow was all part of converting a very complicated book into a more happy mousical. Also, in the book, the fact that he comes from a different place than Elphaba is really important to the story, because (I'm going to try not to be too specific for those who haven't read the book) she has to go there to find Fiyero's family.
Anyway, there's my two cents on Fiyero. Do what you want with it.
But here's the really important part... Emcee's two cents on Norbert!! I actually have never seen him live. When I saw Wicked, he was out with a back injury.
But he's damn sexy, and I love his voice. I just bought the L5Y CD, and I love it.

Posted: 6/26/04 at 11:16pmNorbert Leo Butz. What can I say? He's talented, but Fiyero is a little, well, might I saw it...empty. It's not really that hard to play the role of an empty headed person who changes to a deep and caring amazingly intelligent person.

Posted: 6/27/04 at 1:27amIn the book Fiyero was blue, not black if I remember right. He had blue jewels or markings on his face and they couldn't do that on stage because it didn't look right to the people in the audience who were far back. They tried.

I saw Norbert in Cabaret in Los Angeles with Teri Hatcher.
He is extremely talented and unfortunately wasted in Wicked.
Hey, maybe I should have gone to Wicked wasted?

The character of Fiyero in the book was not blue, only the markings on his face were. He was black.
