Norbert to win the Tony???

Although I will not post a few review of DRS (Seen at yesterday's matinee), I will say that Norbert Leo Butz is AMAZING in this role. Finally, he has been given a characterto really work with. I had seen him in "Wicked", and wasn't crazy about him. I did prefer Joey Mac in that role. And I'm not crazy about Norbert on the L5Y recording either. But, at yesterday's performance, he really blew me away.
I know he's going to be up against some very talented people (Hank, David, Tim), but, I really do believe the voters are going to sway in his direction. I also predict that this show will win for best set design.
P.S. For those that have been seeing this show in previews, everything is pretty much set except for the opening number. That is the one thing that they are continuing to make changes on.

Best set design? I thought that was the the only weak link in the show. I found the sets very unimaginative and ugly.

Posted: 2/17/05 at 9:13amI agree that Norbert is great in this show. He'll always be my favorite Roger and one of my favorite Emcees but I think this may be his best work so far.

I found the turntable to bring soem wonderful staging moments, as well as the Oklahoma number.
I also loved how the land would appear and reappear on the back scrim.
I kinda take it back. It is going up against Chitty, and what could win over a flying car?

Posted: 2/17/05 at 9:29amFrom the photos I've seen, Chitty has more wonderful sets besides the flying car. Spamalot also has a fantastic set design. I think that category will be a toss up between those two.

I agree, I think it is very possible Norbert is going to take home the Tony this year.
ETA: But, I haven't seen Chitty *yet*!

"I know he's going to be up against some very talented people (Hank, David, Tim)"
Assuming you mean Hank Azaria, I've heard he's not on stage much, definately limiting him to the Supporting category, if that.

I don't think Tom Hewitt even has a prayer of being nominated...
And I definitely think Norbert will win this year.

i would enjoy it if chitty won nothing. i don't know why but i have such an aversion to it and i've never even seen it! the only redeeming quality i see so far is the presence of raul.
ok, start the yelling at me.

Posted: 2/17/05 at 12:12pmWEll I have seen the London CHITTY, and the sets are absolutely boring and terrible. Unless they change them and make them more impressive, I cannot see them winning. A flying car has nothing to do with the set.

apdarcey - I'll give you a couple of brownie points for saying something nice about Raúl, but the show itself can't be nearly as terrible as some of the other crap we've been stomaching this season. Give it a chance.
That said, Norbert had better win.

Damn right! Norbert better win. He never stops entertaining in DRS. The man is unbelieveable!
At the stage door, I was drunk with love for him so I blurted out "You're soooo gonna win the Tony!" and I told him that I loved him. Dork? Yes, I know. And he said "Will you still love me if I don't win?" To which I said, "Norbert, I'd love you even if you were a Red Sox fan!"

Betty-
Did many people stage door the show when you were there?
#20re: Norbert to win the Tony???
Posted: 2/17/05 at 3:22pmBut will he be categorized as a "lead"? Like so many other leading actors not billed above the title, he could wind up in the supporting category.
#21re: Norbert to win the Tony???
Posted: 2/17/05 at 3:24pmYes, he's absolutely leading actor. Both him and Lithgow are. HE is billed above the title. However, so is Joanna Gleason and Gregory Jbara - but they are clearly supporting.

If Norbert goes into supporting, he'll be up against Denis O'Hare.
Given his 'buzz' (it cerainly seems to be tour de force role; I haven't seen DRS) he would still have an edge.
#23re: Norbert to win the Tony???
Posted: 2/17/05 at 3:25pmThe producers will most likely send a petition to the Tony people so that Greg and Joanna can be considered for Supporting.
#24re: Norbert to win the Tony???
Posted: 2/17/05 at 3:27pmHe will definitely be considered a lead, no question. He is above the title and it is a lead role.
