Somehow I'm just getting around to watching the Anniversary Concert of Les Miserables. I'm intriqued by a lot of the performances.

For those of you that saw him, what did you think of Norm Lewis as Javert? There are moments I think he must have been wonderful, and other times I'm not so sure.

Also, does anyone know anything about the kid that played Gavroche (Robert Madge)? He seems terrific.

The Revival and the 25th Anniversary Concert are two different things....

Also, I thought Norm Lewis was amazing all throughout, definitely nothing to complain about.
And this is what that Gavroche is up to...

I loved him in the revival; he was one of my favorite actors.

Of course they are different things....but seeing one with Norm Lewis, made me query the other.

I saw him more recently (September, 2010) in the London production as Javert, and I thought he was excellent. I had seen video of him in the revival and people who had seen him in it would say he was miscast. A large part of it, according to some of those who saw him in the revival multiple times, had to do with Norm just having a very approachable demeanor about him. In other words, he's not menacing enough. He oozes "I'm yer BFF!" And that smile doesn't help.

But he was far better by the time I saw him in the London production in 2010. He made an extra effort to make sure he didn't come across like the friendly hunk next door, and he sold me. One of the best I've seen in the role.

I saw him as Javert in London and he was wonderful. Saw him as Porgy and he was wonderful again!

I thought he was great vocally but I didn't buy him for a minute as a scary policeman. He reads too nice.

Norm must be the most underrated actor on Broadway.

I'd venture a guess that the most underrated actor on Broadway isn't playing leads.
