I don't have the issue of people not knowing what broadway is... I'm mad at my boss for after all this time, she doesn't understand how much broadway means to me and that going to Stars in the Alley was really important to me and she won't let me go. She says that I can do my "social thing" on weekends. But I have to work every weekend! And I have to miss Broadway on Broadway in September too because of a work thing. She just doesn't understand. I'm not doing anything today.

Posted: 6/1/05 at 11:25pmin lit. one day my teacher mentioned langston hughs, and my friend david and i (obsessed with rent)yelled out "TO THE STAGE! TO UTA, TO BUDDHA" and stopped after we realized no one knew what we were talking about.

Haha, Jared, I don't even know what you're talking about and I love Broadway. Maybe it's because I saw RENT so long ago and wasn't a fan.
I know, people here will kill because of it, but it's just not my thing.

jaded*, not jared.
and its in the song "la vie boheme" which is hard to understand. to someone who is just seeing the show (like when i saw it) it just sounds like jibberish.
but dont worry, i dont hate you for not liking rent haha

Posted: 6/2/05 at 12:02amLol, I do the same thing, in health class the teacher was telling us the dangers of drinking or something. All I know is that he said 'wine and beer' and I started going "two handcrafted beers made in local breweries, to yoga, to..." and then I realized that everyone was staring at me as I slowly sunk down into my chair. And I always us the expression 'Oh my God, that's so Rent" (actually I use whatever show is appropriate at the moment), and I get the strangest looks from people, like what the hell is Rent. You mean that's NOT normal? Shiznits! Elyse. No day but today.

We were reading a lecture in European history and my teacher started talking about Vaclav Havel... you can guess what happened next... THE SEX PISTOLS, 8 BC! **SIGH** So many blank stares. People are finally used to the fact that I'm going to bring up Broadway in class and am going to sing showtunes in the halls. They accept it now and have actually started learning from it!
BTW... I could not find Spamalot anywhere in the Broadway section of my local FYE. After 15 minutes I finally found it... in the SOUNDTRACK section... GOOG GRIEF!

Posted: 6/2/05 at 12:27amI have to order all of my CDs from Amazon......We have no good CD stores...it's awful...I always quote broadway shows and people are like "Huh?". It's sad.

Both our Borders and our Barnes & Nobles used to have separate sections for show tunes...however, slowly but surely all the stores have started to merge cast recordings with soundtracks. I HATE THAT! You mean cast recordings don't even deserve their own section anymore?!
I dread going to music stores I haven't been to in awhile because I'm afraid to see how much smaller the cast recording section has gotten, if it's even existant anymore...
*shudder*
It's inhumane.

I pretty much consider myself to be abnormal.
I am a "self-proclaimed" geek. =) and proud of it, too.

Posted: 6/2/05 at 12:53amOK people, let me introduce you all to Amazon.com. No matter where you live, you can get any cast recording, soundtrack, CD, whatever. You can pre-order too so it will be shipped to you right when it is released. And if you spend $25 or more, the shipping is free, and don't tell me you don't have at least 2 cast recordings you can buy that will equal $25 or more together. It cuts out all the going from store-to-store, dealing with stupid sales people stuff. Plus the prices on Amazon are going to be better than at any retail store. You do it from the comfort of your own computer and it is shipped right to your home. Not too shabby, folks!

Posted: 6/2/05 at 12:58amCompared to our local "theatre section," the Chicago Borders is quite good. Our Wal-Mart has a TOTAL of ONE copy of Wicked, ONE copy of Assassins revival (those two probably left over from last year's post-Tony 'blo-out') and one or two Spamalots. Oh, and several copies of FIVE OR SIX DIFFERENT versions of Phantom, along with an occasional Les Miz.

Posted: 6/2/05 at 1:14amI actually DO usually use Amazon.com, but the "classic" feel of purchasing something with REAL cash and being able to have it on the spot is just too good to pass-up, when possible!

Posted: 6/2/05 at 8:56amnow come on people..just because we are gay doesnt mean we have to like ethel or even know who she is. that is being very stereotypical and doesnt accomplish anything...also..just because people dont know musical theatre doesnt mean they are stupid..many people never had the opportunites that some of us had to learn about theatre. we should look at it as an opporunity to share what we know..i dont mean to sound trite but truly a lot of people never get to experience theatre and honestly not good theatre..dont beat them up teach them

Hey- I am a self-proclaimed theatre geek. And I have no problems with it.
My favorite is whenever anyone mentions Calvin Klein it automatically spurs a rendition of:
"The Calvin Klein model? Steve, gotta go. The model. Who lives in penthouse A."
