Amazing- with all the talent, there was not one showstopping segment last light- every one of the nominated shows came off poorly....the best being JB....everything else was a zzzzzzzzzz...and when are they going to utilize the amazing chorus dancers on Broadway for an opening number???? Another poor opening number yet again- how many times do we have to hear "There's no Business......?"- Someone get a creative director in there....but alas it is the same every year...bad- maybe the Tonys just cannot translate to good TV
---One WOW moment, James Earl Jones.
Christian Hoff's win for best featured actor... and then connecting with his short appearance on All My Children as the engineer behind Pine Valley's blackout.

IMO there isnt one WOW moment in one of the new shows. so that would explain your dilemna. IMO of course.

Maybe it's because the musical theatre as we knew it is mortally wounded or DEAD. Please dont tell me The Wedding Singer and Jersey Boys, plus Hairspray and Wicked are in a class with the great musicals of old? And the revivals are almost as bad -- Harry Connick and Kathleen Marshall? Raitt and Fosse must be doing somersaults in their graves.
The ONLY wow moment for me was the 2 second video clip of Jennifer Holliday.
yes. Holliday was a wow moment on stage. and those are far and few between. broadway is different now. its just the bottom line. u have shows like the wedding singer.. hairspray.. tarzan..mama mia.. etc that just dont lend themselves to creating WOW moments. its a new day.
I agree SALLY my only WOW moment was James Earl Jones recreating a brief portion of his Troy Monologue from FENCES. Other than that BLAH!
And a blah Tony's broadcast is what ur gonna get when most of broadway itself is BLAH today.
I thought "Hell No" and the "Jersey Boys" numbers were the closest anything last night came to WOW.
EDIT: And Molly Ringwald's eyes. WOW.

I was actually really surprised that there weren't many wow momments. I was impressed with the Weddning Singer Performance and the Jersey Boys...but I wouldn't say that they were wow momments. I was really disopointed with the opening number.

The only WOW moment for me was the trailer for the upcoming Dreamgirls movie. That rocked. Everything else...unimpressive to downright depressing.
James Earl Jones and the cast of the Wedding Singer made the night for me. The Wedding Singer cast was the only thing that cab be called remotely "fun" out of the whole evening, so cheers to them.

I believe that in about a decade of Tony-watching this is the worst opening number I have yet seen, I believe I'm being kind when I say Harry Connick Jr. was mediocre during the number. The only WOW moments for me were Christian Hoff's win as well as Best Revival, and they weren't exactly good WOWs.
The Wedding Singer performance reminded me of how atrocious the show is and I just found the whole show to be boringly predictable.
Yes, the wow moments were that short clip of Jennifer Holliday. When they showed that I started screaming with joy. James Earl Jones was another wow moment. He's always wow-ing though. And Patti LuPone snapping behind Harry Connick, Jr. in his opening schtick was hilarious.
Oh, and when "Sweeney Todd" lost was an upseting wow moment for me. I turned off the TV.
Oh, and when Jim Dale lost. That was just truly depressing.

I've seen the Holliday clip a fagillion times, so that was no "wow" for me. The Jersey Boys performance, Pajama Game and LaChanze's wins were the only "wow" moments for me.
I loved the Jennifer Holliday clip. I recently saw the whole clip online. I'm excited about Dreamgirls: The Movie coming out. I never got a chance to see it on Broadway, but I've loved the soundtrack for years. I am going to see it performed by the Black Rep Theater Co. in St. Louis this Friday.
Really.....what was up with Molly Ringwald's. It was a like a Stepford flashback!
I thought Sutton was pretty WOWSY!!!!

The only part I was really into was the tribute to the past Tony Awards. You know...when I was remembered of when it was actually enjoyable.
The Wedding Singer's number was WOW, just because of the energy, I love the show, but i think they should have done a medley, because the show has a lot of good songs, and i wish Amy Spanger and Laura Benanti could sing at least a line or 2. Just seeing julie Andrews at the end was breathtaking. That woman is class all the way.
I thought Sutton's performance was the best of the night as well. I also enjoyed The Color Purple's segment. The biggest Wow moment for me was when LaChanze won. I wowed also when Hoff, Jersey Boys, and The Pajama Game won. Those wows were for other reasons though.
You're right. There were some neat, fun,and cool moments, but nothing that really wowed us. Nothing we will be talking about years from now.
My boyfriend and I went to get taco's right when James Earl Jones started his bit, so we didn't watch the Color Purple. He hates Oprah, and he's glad the show didn't win, but he's happy for Rhonda Sapp.
"u have shows like the wedding singer.. hairspray.. tarzan..mama mia.. etc that just dont lend themselves to creating WOW moments. its a new day."
I would never include HAIRSPRAY in that list of shows. EVER.
