Advance "Marci X" reviews:
AINTITCOOLNEWS:
Marci X
Long time reader, first time poster. I saw few weeks back a test screening of Marci X, and since than I wished I haven’t seen this movie at all. The only good thing about this movie I can say is that it is better than Freddy Got Fingered. As that movie was an insult to all human’s intelligence, this movie is an insult to all Jews and African Americans. It portrays all Jews to be money hungry rich people and all blacks as rap singers. There is no other type.
The story is as it says on its imdb.com that a rich Jew girl takes over a music label when her father is instructed by Doctors to not work anymore because of his health. She takes over this record company whose black Rap artist is a controversial singer. She tries to rope him in and fall in love with him, and then every one live happily ever after. That’s the story in a nutshell.
The music is bad; the humor is juvenile or worse not funny at all. Lisa Kudrow, who I enjoyed the most in the movie Opposite of Sex, is sleepwalking through her role. She is plain bad in this role. And Damon Wayans is too bad for words. He was good in Last Boyscout, but in this movie he is comatose.
I rate it as the second worst movie I have ever seen after Freddy Got Fingered. I will not recommend this movie to even my worst enemies, Ok, Who am I kidding? May be only to my worst enemies.
Review Two:
I just returned from a test screening for the upcoming Lisa Kudrow, Damon Wayons movie "Marci X" here in New York. As usual, I had to sign a waiver that I would not discuss the movie with anyone (especially internet websites!) so for purposes of this review you can call me Dr. Solar.
The film is pretty poor. It is completely a color by numbers picture. Richard Benjamin of Love At First Bite directs and stars as Marci's father. The whole notion of Richard Benjamin attached reminds me of the scene in Mulholland Drive where Naomi Watts is told that the film she is auditioning for is being made as a favor to a has-been director. The feel of the film is in Benjamin's 1970s style of humor with overlays of attempted jokes that he thinks will contemporize it.
The film meanders through its scenes without much thought toward developing the characters or the relationship between Marci and Dr $. Wayans is funny as usual, but the script limits him in his role as a gangsta rapper. Lisa Kudrow looks old in the film.
Marci X cannot decide if it's a film about racism, about censorship, a romantic comedy, or just Jungle Fever meets Clueless. It basically takes all of these concepts, and more, and puts them all through a puree to get this mixture which resembles oil mixed with water.
Just as I suspected. I guess this will be available for rental at Blockbuster any minute now, right next to From Justin to Kelly. Sometimes, certain movies need to stay in the can and/or go straight to video, so as not to embarrass anyone and waste the movie goers money.

I heard this was finished a while ago but they could'nt fix it with editing....
Dente, your right...
It's a dump release...
they put it out there...hope it makes a few bucks and then two weeks later ..
the DVD comes out.....
Kudrow should be fine.... I am hearing GREAT things about her in WONDERLAND which should also give a big boost to the crazy and loopy but very talented Val Kilmer..
Hey, Val could play Guido Contini now that I think of it...he's got the chops (i.e "The Doors")
Sometimes, there's just no amount of editing that can fix crap. You can't put stuff in that's not already there.

You can tighten ...make things flow better.... but if it's dreck...it's dreck...
I love that aintitcoolnews...these are reviews from "normal" folks...people who are not "real" reviewers...and they don't hold back..
One guy wrote about GIGLI, like, 6 months ago at the first test screening...in Westwood...and he was like..it's crap...they will never be able to fix it..
and he was right...

Did they ever end up releasing that Meg Ryan boxing flick that was supposed to come out last winter?
Two phrases spring to mind regarding Gigli and Marci X (which has been in the re-editing room for THREE YEARS)
1. You can put **** in a hat and make it dance, but it's still ****.
and the more succinct version:
2. You can't polish a turd.

If a movie's title is odd and unappealing, the movie is going to bomb.
Hollywood studios, you heard it here first.

What about a bad title?? that'll kill a show pretty good.

Voice, I really have to ask these two questions.
What does your posting have to do w/theatre other than the fact that perhaps one/two minor but promising theatre performers have roles in these films?
Why not post your comments about movies on moviefone, for example?
I'll admit that I only skimmed them as I assessed it's not theatre related and I had no interest.
I've no interest in starting an argument with you but I must say that in my opinion an off-topic posting like like yours a total waste of space. The only benefit it appears to have is that it adds one more post to you ledger.

Dear Broadway Bulldog...
Marci X has been a constant topic on this board since it was discovered that a GREAT NUMBER of BROADWAY ..umm..Personalities... are in it...
To me, this meant that a number of people on this board will plunk down 10 bucks to see it..
Some advance word on the film might be of help, as the studio is not allowing critic screenings...
Yours for a better WORLD...
Save the 10 bucks kids!
I am not adverse to sitting through something awful if it has people in it that I am a fan of, but even I have my limits.

I would like to see Marci X-- if only for the boy band parodies. Matthew Morrison gave a interview in The Advocate. Maybe it will be so bad (like Showgirls and Glitter) that one will have to own it just for sh.ts and giggles (and drinking games)
While I'm not particularly a fan of his, my curiosity may get the better of me just so I can see what the hell Manley Pope does in this film. And of course there are the others mentioned in previous posts. I had heard awhile ago that the film wasn't gonna be released at all. So surprised when the ads started running a few weeks ago.

well, as far as what Manley Pope does in the movie, we know it isn't acting.
Well, what do you know, here's something BG2 and I can fully agree on. His presence alone, is reason enough to stay away.
How about "Gigli" The Musical. If the movie is as bad as reported, it could be a real turkey of a musical. I wonder if the movie was as bad as "Ishtar" ,"Howard The Duck" or "Hudson Hawk" . Will wait for it to hit video as it does not appear to be worth the $ 10 bucks & it should be on video fairly soon
