Advance "Marci X" reviews:
AINTITCOOLNEWS:
Marci X
Long time reader, first time poster. I saw few weeks back a test screening of Marci X, and since than I wished I haven’t seen this movie at all. The only good thing about this movie I can say is that it is better than Freddy Got Fingered. As that movie was an insult to all human’s intelligence, this movie is an insult to all Jews and African Americans. It portrays all Jews to be money hungry rich people and all blacks as rap singers. There is no other type.
The story is as it says on its imdb.com that a rich Jew girl takes over a music label when her father is instructed by Doctors to not work anymore because of his health. She takes over this record company whose black Rap artist is a controversial singer. She tries to rope him in and fall in love with him, and then every one live happily ever after. That’s the story in a nutshell.
The music is bad; the humor is juvenile or worse not funny at all. Lisa Kudrow, who I enjoyed the most in the movie Opposite of Sex, is sleepwalking through her role. She is plain bad in this role. And Damon Wayans is too bad for words. He was good in Last Boyscout, but in this movie he is comatose.
I rate it as the second worst movie I have ever seen after Freddy Got Fingered. I will not recommend this movie to even my worst enemies, Ok, Who am I kidding? May be only to my worst enemies.
Review Two:
I just returned from a test screening for the upcoming Lisa Kudrow, Damon Wayons movie "Marci X" here in New York. As usual, I had to sign a waiver that I would not discuss the movie with anyone (especially internet websites!) so for purposes of this review you can call me Dr. Solar.
The film is pretty poor. It is completely a color by numbers picture. Richard Benjamin of Love At First Bite directs and stars as Marci's father. The whole notion of Richard Benjamin attached reminds me of the scene in Mulholland Drive where Naomi Watts is told that the film she is auditioning for is being made as a favor to a has-been director. The feel of the film is in Benjamin's 1970s style of humor with overlays of attempted jokes that he thinks will contemporize it.
The film meanders through its scenes without much thought toward developing the characters or the relationship between Marci and Dr $. Wayans is funny as usual, but the script limits him in his role as a gangsta rapper. Lisa Kudrow looks old in the film.
Marci X cannot decide if it's a film about racism, about censorship, a romantic comedy, or just Jungle Fever meets Clueless. It basically takes all of these concepts, and more, and puts them all through a puree to get this mixture which resembles oil mixed with water.
