Went to a local Goodwill and found a plethora of OBCR Vinyls, some in what appears to be original wrappers and others not with some aging to them. Any idea how much these would go for? I also got some "Cast Recordings" from movie versions as well.

I've never paid more than $5 for a vinyl (but rarely more than $1), and I have hundreds of them, a lot were still shrinkwrapped. Don't expect to retire on your find.

That said, I'd love to know what you found.

Some vinyls are worth a little bit to the right buyer (like an original "A Chorus Line" in perfect condition might be worth it to a longtime fan of the show who always wanted one), but for the most part, I agree with xoffender45: most aren't worth enough to justify putting them up on ebay. On the other hand, they might be good to hang on to to use to trade for other Bway items you might want. Personally, I collect vinyls, and love to frame and hang those with exceptional artwork or vinyls for shows I especially love. I'm also curious as to what you found at Goodwill, and might be interested in purchasing if you have anything I've been looking for.

Rule of thumb - if the recording is available on CD no market value for the LP. Collectors love the larger album graphics and you can usually get $1 - $2 for covers in mint condition. A few LP edition with alternate tracks may have a slightly higher market value: the mono Capitol Lp of FUNNY GIRL (with Barbara's ad lib near the end of "Cornet Man") and the original 1st Lp edition of GOLDEN BOY (also on Capitol) which has different takes of songs Sammy Davis later re-recorded because his voice was in rough shape the day the album was made. The re-recorded tracks offer Sammy with a smoother but the performances are much more mannered a from months of playing the role night after night. He has changed some musical lines and also altered a few lyrics (a reference to "Buh-Buh-Buh-Buh-Buh-Buh-Buh-Buh-Buh-Buh-Buh-Bah Bing (Crosby) is replaced by a reference to Dean (as in Martin.)

Some titles that were very rare on LP: The Decca 10-inch albums of THIS IS THE ARMY, CALL ME MISTER, LOOK MA I'M DANCIN', TEXAS LI'L DARLIN', MEXICAN HAYRIDE, and ARMS AND THE GIRL were all valued at $150 to $300 in the late 1970's until MCA licensed the masters to Columbia Special Products who issued them on double feature 12-inch Lp's. Decca Broadway has put all of them out on CD.

One of the most highly prized show albums was the very rare RCA Victor LP of the TV cast of LADY IN THE DARK with Ann Southern. It was only available on Lp for a few years after the 1954 TV broadcast it was deleted before 1960 and never reissued except for a PD release on CD from the U.K. - NOT licensed from RCA. (These U.K. labels don't believe in paying to get the master tapes when they can dub scratchy Lp copies for free.)

Only a very few titles have not yet seen the light of day on CD. Masterworks Broadway has given us superb remasterings (from the original RCA and Columbia tapes) Of such early rarities as MAKE A WISH, the Dinah Shore CALL ME MADAM, SEVENTEEN, THE SAINT OF BLEEKER STREET, and NEW FACES (both 1952 and 1956 editions. Broadway Angel at one time put the entire Capitol library of cast albums out in a 40-disc series including rare items like THE GAY LIFE, KWAMINA, SAIL AWAY and TOVARICH. And Decca Broadway has issued all of the early Decca 78-rpm albums including CARMEN JONES, SONG OF NORWAY and UP IN CENTRAL PARK.

Still the first edition Lp's are fun..Decca's LP of KING AND I is on very thick LP. Their CAROUSEL album with it's stage shot of the opening scene is joy to look at.

For more valuable items seek out weird pieces like the OCR of TOUCH (on Ampex) or the Canadian cast of THE APPLE TREE (just the Adam and Eve segment - on Trillium.) English Decca has 10-inch if Ivor Novello's KING'S RHAPSODY that hasn't been put on CD yet. Also very rare is the OCR of Lloyd Webber's JEEVES (from about 1975- very limited copies were sold.) Until Masterworks Broadway recently re-released it CLOWNAROUDND was another hard to find Lp.

Movie scores are more highly collectable (though again many have been re-released on CD.) On my first visit to New York in 1977 I found a copy of Capitol's rare 10-inch Lp of the score of STREETCAR NAMED DESIRE at Colony...for $250.00!! (I misread the price as thought at first it was $2.50.... not so.) The soundtracks of the various M-G-M musicals have colorful covers and hilarious liner notes. A clever bootleg of Judy Garland in ANNIE GET YOUR GUN is done up to make the cover (and record label) appear to be a legitimate M-g-M Records release. It's not..but even the liner notes are in M-G-M style.

Goodwill stores are always fun to browse.

Just read that Capitol is doing 50th anniversary "special" edition of the OBCR of FUNNY GIRL with a reprint of the original gate-fold jacket and Lp release as well as a Gold CD edition. No word on bonus or alternate takes. The price is (are you sitting down) $

FUNNY GIRL 50th anniversary Lp

If the covers are in excellent condition, let me make a suggestion. Frame them...they make great artwork for the walls. Michael's use to carry, for very cheap, frames that were specific for lp covers. With their weekly 40% off coupon, if they still carry them, you could get it for a couple of dollars.

^ That's what I did. When I lived in Miami, my home office was decorated with my favorite album cover artwork. I purchased my Lp frames from Restoration Hardware.
