Ah, THE DRAMA! This is better than Days of Our Lives (well most anything is better than DAYS these days)!
Still predicting a LA CAGE Tony Win! Unless they speant the $$ on a new Director/Coreographer for the production, it's not THAT SWEET!

This can definitely be spun as a "glorious triumph of the resilient human spirit" sort of thing.
Hope this means we get a recording now. I want Denis!

Posted: 3/29/05 at 4:21pmCan't say I didnt expect this... They should give awards for all the drama BEHIND the stage these days. You can't script this stuff.

Telecharge as of 4:30 EST still says they have "no official word," which won't come until the weekend, and they can't take any action till then. Interesting, huh? I called because I'd already reserved a ticket for Spelling Bee that same night. I was assured that I would get a refund for one or the other of the two tickets. Though I was really excited about seeing Spelling Bee, I guess my first choice would still be Sweet Charity, providing it's with Christina. It sounded like I wouldn't have the option of sticking with Spelling Bee anyway. It's been an amazing story and even though Sweet Charity sounds a bit too much like a regional revival of the show (which happens all the time), after all that's been written about it, and because I think Miss Applegate will be absolutely winning in the role, I guess I'm glad about this turn of events. (Which is still not official.)

Posted: 3/29/05 at 5:17pmwell as always Telecharge doesn't know anythig, but they refunded my money and we got tickets for Chitty so I hope the money comes through to my account. Frankly this show seems doomed that I'd rather see Chitty.

How can Telecharge not know anything? Yeesh.
I have a question: Have the Tonys ever decided not to nominate in a category? Could there be no musical revival Tony? I know the Pulitzers have done that at times.

Posted: 3/29/05 at 6:29pmTelecharge didn't know about the "cancellation" til a few days later and we called today and they said to call back Friday for more information that they weren't SURE if it's opening again or not. My friend and I are giving up they refunded our money so we're going to take that and just stick to Chitty.

Posted: 3/29/05 at 10:10pmConsidering it was Christina who has saved the show, I say she deserves to open it on Broadway.

Posted: 3/29/05 at 10:23pmI bought tickets for the 18th, not the 11th. I'd like to see Charlotte too, but since I can only spring for 1 set, it has to be with Christina.

yes, thebigkrakowski, the reviews speak for themselves....
and this is just a PORTION of the great review it got in Boston!
"As for Wayne Cilento's choreography, it was far better than one might have expected, given the man's spotty reputation; the dances were energetic and well focused, with just enough nods to the iconic signature moves of Bob Fosse (director-choreographer of the original production) to serve as an hommage rather than coming across as slavish imitation. Similarly, there were no major, obvious flaws in the direction of Walter Bobbie, whose track record is also far from stellar. That said, I imagine that the show would have been in even better shape by the time I saw it if, earlier on, Bobbie had been able to make stronger, wiser decisions in terms of the proposed changes to Sweet Charity's book and song stack. (As far as that goes, or went, he might have received greater support from lead producers Barry and Fran Weissler.)
In a recent New York Post article on the travails of this ill-fated production, Michael Riedel questioned the point of reviving Sweet Charity at all. He wrote that, "A handful of fine Cy Coleman tunes notwithstanding, the show is old-fashioned and second rate, and was never intended as anything more than a star vehicle for Fosse's wife, Gwen Verdon." Well, I beg to differ. Charity may be "old-fashioned" but, considering the lack of craft and talent evidenced in so many contemporary musicals, that's by no means a mark against it. As for its being "second rate," that might be true in comparison to such deathless masterpieces of musical theater as West Side Story and Carousel; but the fact remains that Sweet Charity is a wonderfully tuneful, funny, sad, skillfully constructed show that's absolutely first-rate in comparison to most of what we see on Broadway these days. For all the problems of the production that just died in Boston, it was good enough -- at least, with Charlotte d'Amboise in the lead -- that I'm truly sorry it won't make it to New York"
Go to Theatermania.com for the entire review. Or the Chicago Tribune. Or the Minnesota papers. The reviews were half and half until the Boston Globe slammed it (after the very public drama, mind you).

Yes. I read them. That's my point. The show got tepid reviews in three cities and doesn't have much of an advance (according to stories in the Times and Post). Why bring it in? It's irresponsible to investors. You may like the show, but will it make money?
