OPENING NIGHT PLAYBILLS

Can someone describe the difference between the "opening night playbill" that just has the date on the title page and the one with the seal. I was under the impression that if you go to the final press preview or opnening night you will receive the same playbill, with opening night and the date printed on the title page. I just got into a discussion with someone the said the offial opening night playbill has a seal on the cover, not the playbill with just with opening night and the date on the title page.

The ones that you buy from playbill's online store come with the seal. If you go to the actual show it's just a regular playbill with the date printed at the top of the title page.

Yep. I have never received a playbill with a sticker on it in the theatre. Just the date on the title page and those are given out a few days before/after as well until they run out.

Except if you went to The Little Mermaid opening night, you would have gotten the one with the date AND the seal.

Where you there? They put the stickers on them? For Poppins the "Showbill" was the same with the opening date, no sticker. They did however have special opening night programs.

Any Broadway show can have the seal on their opening night Playbills that are handed out in the theatre if they wish to pay for them. Playbill charges the producers a small fee for applying the opening night seals to the Playbills.

A Steady Rain did not have a seal. All My Sons did not have a seal. Cat on a Hot Tin Roof did not have a seal. Blithe Spirit did not have a seal. Equus did not have a seal, nor did Mary Stuart.

I wish people would stop saying with certainty that all opening night Playbills have a seal. They don't. Very few do...and it's not the ugly blue thing seen in the above linked picture: Hamelt's was gold. The only thing that ALL opening night Playbills will have is the date of opening printed on the title page...and that will be on the entire week's supply.

well I was actually referring to the ones that you purchase from playbillstore.com, not the ones that you receive by personally attending a show's opening night. but I guess, thanks for the clarification for everyone else. :)

And you can get these "opening night" Playbills for a long while before the actual opening.

Sorry to bring back an old thread, but I know it's better than opening a new one that's been discussed before. :)

I was wondering, is it worth it to get those opening night playbills off Playbill? I have been dying to get a [title of show] playbill into my collection and I can't find one anywhere for trade or for sale except on Playbill. As the previous posters said, its just a sticker slapped onto a playbill, so is it really worth buying it if you're buying it just for the fact it's an "Opening night playbill?"

Well, if you've been "dying" to get it, I'd say the answer is yes. I mean, it's $10 ... if you wait longer, it may be you can only find it for like $25 on eBay. Or, you can beg someone to look for one at the flea market...
