Lily Tomlin for Silda is another inspired idea in this thread, Jordan. I may be wrong, but I think Lincoln Center pursued her for the Broadway production when they found out Linda Lavin wouldn't be continuing with the show. As has been the case in recent years (just like when she was pursued for Violet in AUGUST: OSAGE COUNTY,) she didn't show a desire to get back on stage.

She is obviously not a big enough name to do the film, but I'd kill to see Cherry Jones play Polly on stage. Maybe put her opposite Mary-Louise Parker as Brooke, who could do it in either medium.

henrik, while I was half kidding, Jones has made a career of playing significantly older than she really is. Look at DOUBT. She practically transformed. But, separate of each other, both are ideal for the respective roles.

Cool. I would love to see Jones get a big movie part. It's about time. No doubt Jones can play age. Didn't see DOUBT on stage and didn't know she had played Sister A - how old does Sister A have to be anyway? - older.

Sister Aloysius's age is never specified, but she's old enough to have had a significantly happy former life married to her husband before he was killed in World War II. You're led to believe she used becoming a nun as a means to re-invent herself, and given that she's "risen up in the ranks" enough to have become Mother Superior, I always thought she was meant to be at least in her late sixties. For what it's worth, Eileen Atkins was already 72 when she replaced Jones, and Meryl Streep was near 60 when she did the film (and made to look older.)

In regards to OTHER DESERT CITIES, Lauren Ambrose is another actor I'd love to see take a crack at Brooke. Lord knows she got her teeth for the needs of that kind of character on SIX FEET UNDER, much like Rachel Griffiths before her.
