Interesting development. Posting this on the Main Board because I am wondering if this would impact any of the signs or marquees utilized by Broadway theaters and advertising firms? Even if not, I imagine a major change like this could have some kind of impact on the Broadway houses closest to Times Square.

Thanks for sharing. It won't happen though. The advertising dollars are too big of a deal to lose.

Seriously, don't they have anything better to do in Washington. Give me a break. I saw this on the news last night and thought it was a report from the Onion.

What a stupid piece of faux journalism. The tiniest handful of facts buried in a heap of sensationalist quotes from pearl-clutchers galore.
It doesn't sound like the signs are going anywhere, but instead the city has been receiving funding it should've been, or hadn't been following the rules in order to receive it. I imagine that loophole will get fixed or a work-around is made.
Local news, I tell ya...
This can't be real, it must be an article from The Onion right? Right??

BUT THERE WAS AN EDICT!!!!
This is such a non story. NYS petitioned to get Times Square considered "aterial" to the Highways. They did and received money to help keep up the infrastructure up. Someone looked at the 1965 law and said "Oooops, this might apply". End of story, they will work out some sort of quick exclusion admendment for Times Square and move on.
As much as I despise that part of town because of the billboards and marquees, I do understand it is what the tourists want to see when they come here because to them, that is THE REAL NYC!

FIRST THEY CAME FOR OUR GUNS AND THEN THEY CAME FOR OUR ICONIC BILLBOARDS.
Thank you, The Fountainheadband for helping us see the enemy!
Laugh if you want, but I've never seen Keith Watson of Flushing this upset.

OR ELSE! says the OBAMA ADMINISTRATION! OR ELSE!!!!
Whatever happened to the news?
You guys are probably right about this being bogus, but still, I love the idea of Times Square becoming a bit less horrible. I'm all for removing those hideous LED billboards.

That would be a self-self-self-self-self-self-self-self-self-self-self-self-self-self-selfie. no?

It seems that BroadwayWorld.com News has fell for it.
Of course they fell for it. The message board is their primary resource for half the things they post.

You all laugh, but I ask you: where are the smoking billboards from the 1970s? Huh?
