I have noticed that musicals now a days are getting to be mostly music. The music is slowly overtaking the dialog. Who agrees with me?

Well, for awhile there was a huge opera movement on Broadway. I'd say that dialog is what's coming back. I think Broadway is just becoming more diversified, not just the standard musical.

I haven't really noticed. I still think that most shows have standard amounts of music and dialogue.

Joizey, look at your icon. In comparison to stuff like Rogers and Hammerstein, there's a lot more music in WICKED.

I like musicals with lots of music.

Well...I also like some musicals with lots of dialogue, too. Sometimes the music is so mediocre, I look forward to the scenes.
It depends. But B'way definitely has a huge mix...and I think this new season of musicals will bring even more variety.
And in the words of Martha Stewart, that's a good thing. Off-topic: Don't you just LOVE Martha Stewart stuff from K-Mart?

Or if you want to be technical, I would start by spelling it 'dialogue', since we aren't really saying things.

I think there's a lot more underscoring, even if there aren't more songs. Music's used to cover transitions and dialogue more noticeably than the R & H type shows.
I'm not completely sold on the merits of this either. While there are always effective moments of underscore, I think the wall-to-wall music tends to numb people to the songs as the show wears on and I think the nuances and specifics of the dialogue are lost under the music.

Call me crazy, but I'd rather hear a musical dialouge than a spoken one.
Could be all the freaking opera they're making me study at university. Who knows :).
I don't really see anything wrong with this trend. It's a trend, after all. I happen to like it :)

After finishing working on Evita, I can't stand the singing in it that sounds forced. There are lines in it that just don't feel right being sung. I think I prefer some dialogue for the most part. The wittier the better.

I think that often the shows that are operas tend to make the suspension of disbelief of people singing in the middle of nowhere much easier b/c the whole thing is singing. But, in shows like AVENUE Q and WICKED...As I and many have said, Broadway is becoming more and more diverse, which is a good thing.

Musicals in which the score dominated the show have been around since the 50s at least. Most Happy Fella and Candide are two examples.

That's kind of a simplistic way of thinking about it. Maybe the recitative in Caroline just wasn't very well-done in JakeB's opinion. I know I'd prefer more diaglogue to poorly done recitative.

there are many examples of an opera movement, but i think its going to last. they've already recreated an opera on broadway (la boheme) and more and more musicals are mainly music with tidbits of dialogue between. i for one enjoy the predominantly musical pieces, and like the 50/50 split just fine as well. variation is the word here.

I happen to like more music. That may come from the fact that i cant see shows and i only expierience them from the cast recordings, and the more show the better. I like very much that in the original broadway recording of Assassins you get to hear the final sequence, though it has no music.
On that topic, i would like to know why there aren't more full symphonic recordings? more specifically, i want very much to hear michelle ferder sing the "wicked witch of the east" that ive heard so much about. but i will never be able to. Any tears that could be shed on my behalf would be much appreciated...

See it when it comes on tour. It won't be the OBC, but it should be really good. And are you talking about a song title? Most of Michelle Federer's songs are on the CD. Also, I like the operas/high music percentage better myself. I don't like Andrew Lloyd Webber so much, but I think he's one of the most important composers of our time b/c he brought opera into mainstream. He's the reason we have modern operas.

Michelle sings in one little section of "dancing through life" and i love her voice in it. Actually ive only heard about the song once from someone. But i am pretty sure there are loads of other songs i haven't heard. I wont be able to see any show for two years.
