When I saw it, I thought the costumes and the puppets and everything were of course amazing, but the entire cast seemed so disinterested and not there at all. But then again, I can't really blame them, some of them after all were playing a giraffe's backside.
When I went I thought it was theatrically thrilling...and there are a few good songs (and they are all in a row!..."Shadowland...Endless Night...He lives in You...etc."
But it was also a sing-a-long.
THAT part sucked
Dude, alot of musicals are sing a longs. If the songs weren't catchy then the show wouldn't be interesting.
Dude...
usually it's NOT a sing-a-long. During "most musicals" do you have hundreds of 3-12 year olds reciting every lyric from every song...audibly. No. Catchy--yes. Sing-a-longs--definitely not.
There are many musicals with great catchy songs---even musicals with songs people already know (Mamma Mia! We Will Rock You)....but the audience is not singing a long.
THE LION KING, so far, has been the only exception.
=)
Well the Lion King is a musical that is meant for a wide range of audiences to go see, especially for families with younger children. I mean I was lucky enough that none of the kids there screamed or sang along out loud to the songs (I'm sorry if you had to experience that though!) But I really love the music and the characters since alot of them are close to my heart! I loved the movie ever since I went to go see it when I was 5, and now that I've seen the musical, I just love them both now!
And that's the magic of theatre.
Brilliant.
Glad you liked it! :)
I saw it out in London and I enjoyed it too!
Oh man, you can keep it!
Glad you like it though

Oh my man I love this show and it's really good right now on broadway that is. Josh Tower as Simba is really one of the best I have seen. I was not a fan of Kissy's NALA at first but I have learned to enjoy her. Rafiki was amazing and Patrick as Scar really brings a lot into the character. I am really not pleased with the Shenzi though, I feel like the u/s does such a better job. But the show as a whole I think is pretty spectacular, the opening number is one of if not the best in Broadway history.
Which Shenzi u/s do you mean? I saw Sophia Stephens play the role last time I saw it. It has been a few years since I saw Patrick Page play Scar. I saw Jeff Binder go on more recently and thought he did a really superb job. I never had the chance to see Jason Raize. He was absent the day I saw it and now it is sadly too late. I once saw a clip of him doing Endless Night and so that is all I have.
I know what people mean about the kids in the theatre. I think it is great that they go, but they need to learn how to be quiet during a show and not sing-along. I always enjoy performances more without children there.
Ta'Rea is the best Nala currently performing and the best I have ever seen!!! lol, k, I'm done. But seriously, I've never been completely happy with the people who have been Nala.

I am curious, TLKfan, who have you seen play Nala?

I've seen all of the understudies. I think that Anjelica Edwards and Rema Webb are amzing. They add so much characer to the role, and I prefer Shenzi to have an higher voice than Banzai. And add more things to the song and they do that. Sophia is a better Nala cover. I think the Nala you saw was on the tour. She was an Aida Standby and Little Shop Of Horrors standby. She is suppose to take over for Kissy when she leaves soon. Brandi Massey from WIcked is also up for taking over, since she also did it in London.

i saw Kissy when i saw the show, and she was my favorite part about it!
seriously, i really like the new music they added for the show better than the music from the movie, like "Shadowland", "Lioness Hunt", and "Endless Night" are all really cool songs!
Colle, I'd have to look because I've seen the show many times, but these are the ones that I know I've seen: Jewl Anguay, Saskia Garel, Sharon L. Young, Renee Elise Goldsberry, Adia Ginneh, Kissy Simmons, and Alexia Khadime.

JEWL ANGUAY!!!!! There is a name I haven't heard in a long time. Where is she now? I saw her about 6 years ago in the Miss Saigon tour as Kim. Fantastic!! The same time I saw John Hill as Chris.

Sharon is hands down one of the best Nala's I have ever seen. Her "Shadowlands" was like I have never heard it. I heard a audio of Brandi Massey in the West Ends a few years back, and she sound great too. It was almost too low for her.
I saw Jewl and Sharon in '02. It's been a while...but there were a few in the LA production that I did like.
I recently saw this show for the first time. I must admit, I was moved by the opening number and the show in its entirety is visually stunning, but I couldn't help wondering if Julie Taymor was ever kicking herself when she started rehearsing with the script. I mean, you've got BRILLIANT puppetry and then a fart joke. I'm sure Disney wanted to keep most of the original movie script, limiting the artistic lisence of those who adapted the story for the stage. But, wow. Nonetheless, it's a wonderful show for the kids, and beautiful to look at. I probably wouldn't choose to sit through it again, though.
I saw Sharon L. Young play Nala 6 years ago, and I thought she did a great job. I have seen Kissy Simmons twice since then so it's harder to remember previous times. Circle of Life is always fantastic, but I like a lot of the second act too: Endless Night, Shadowland, He Lives in You with the Mufasa mask, Can You Feel the Love Tonight, and even the fight music and King of Pride Rock. It's such an amazing show and I'm looking forward to seeing it again in June!
Is Alton White still playing Mufasa? I ask because their website has not been updated since last November.

Another question(s) for you, TLKfan, how was Renee Goldsberry like as Nala? What do you remember of her?

Alton is still Mufusa. Renee Goldsberry was not one of my favorites, her voice I personally don't think is right for the role. She was a major difference coming in after Sharon who brought so much to the role. Renee almost sound a little too legit on "Shadowlands" but she looked great. She is absolutely my least favorite of all the Nala's I have seen.

Thanks for answering about Renee, atlsuperstar. I have never got to see her in a show, but I do like her voice. When I saw the Gazelle tour(in Dec 2003) of the "Lion King" I saw Lisa Nicole Wilkerson as Nala. She didn't have as strong a belt as Heather Headley, but I did like her. Did anyone here see Lisa Nicole Wilkerson as Nala?
