On the Town - Encores#1

Was this more concert than show? I love this movie and the original Broadway score is one of my favorites.

Does anyone have the show as a soundfile?

All Encores! shows are semi-staged.

I'd call it a fully-staged reading (with full choreography). And it was phenomenal. I loved the cast and loved the re-staging of the original choreography. Soooo good!

Well, it wasn't quite the full show. The book was cut down a bit and even some bits of the score were missing. But it was good. And it is a great show with an extraordinary score.

Don't forget they had a full dance chorus dancing "in the style of Jerome Robbins". The original choreography has been lost but for the two ballets and one song Robbins rechoreographed from his memories for Jerome Robbins' Broadway, they used that choreography

It was a concert-style/semi-staged production. As all Encores! Concert Series production, the orchestra was on stage.

my bad - PMs are back on.

also - has there ever been an LP or CD recording of the film version? I know it's vastly different, but with Gene Kelly, Frank Sinatra, and Ann Miller I just can't believe it wasnt ever recorded.

The soundtracks for On the Town and Anchors Aweigh were released together on a cd back in the 90s. I think it might be out of print.

"The gods who nurse this universe think little of mortals' cares. They sit in crowds on exclusive clouds and laugh at our love affairs. I might have had a real romance if they'd given me a chance. I loved him, but he didn't love me. I wanted him, but he didn't want me. Then the gods had a spree and indulged in another whim. Now he loves me, but I don't love him." - Cole Porter

The film version of On the Town cut most of the score and put in several new, hugely inferior songs, with music by Roger Edens (though the lyrics for the new songs were by Comden and Green).
