Posted: 12/18/05 at 7:57pmwhy is dennis o'hare not opening his mouth? it's like he's spreading it as wide and thin as he can and it's so strange.

Posted: 12/18/05 at 8:00pmok. from now, i vote kathleen just sticks to the stage, rob does the movies... this is good and i'm having fun, but i keep imagining how truly amazing it could be if rob had directed/choreographed it, like their cinderella.

I love the score, BSO.
Is this your first exposure to it?
The vocal arrangements and orchestrations for this movie are DEPLORABLE. The score sounds awful here - when in fact - it's a delightfully fun and witty score. It's well written.
Kathleen Marshall's choreography is pedestrian at best. Did she even TRY?
The lighting is terrible, the camera work is terrible, the sets are BEYOND terrible. I know it's a fairy tale, but COME ON.
Carol Burnett is the only redeemable part of this movie - she's great.

Posted: 12/18/05 at 8:03pmreally munk, because i'm enjoying a lot of the other performances over her's.
re: 'Once Upon a Mattress' Time#85
Posted: 12/18/05 at 8:03pmI don't think Kathleen Marshall ever tries.

The music sounds bad here. Trust me - it's a good score.
There's no charm to any of this music. Whoever did this musical direction is terrible.
GEt the SJP revival album - the orchestrations are top-notch.

Why isn't SJP in this?
I'll look into it munk, thanks.
Who plays the queen on that CD? Carol?

I'm sticking it out - but I can't say this is really GOOD. Though I have to say Tracey Ullman is better than I expected. It's just not that great a musical to begin with.
I can't wait to watch the Simpsons I'm taping now later tonight.

I'm loving Denis too!
And I do agree about the music - It's been awhile since I heard any other version of it but I remember enjoying the score a lot more.
Nevermind, though, I'm still enjoying it!

That was terrible.
SJP's rendition of "Happily Ever After" was amazing - not even vocally - just her entire performance of it, especially on the CD.
BSO, the queen was Mary Lou Rosato.

Posted: 12/18/05 at 8:13pmI LOVE this show... as a show. I am VERY disappointed with this movie, especially considering how much I enjoyed "Cinderella" and "Annie" ("Music Man" was horribe). To anyone for whom this is their first exposure to "Once Upon A Mattress" and who isn't liking it, the way it's supposed to be presented is INFINATLY BETTER than what they've done with this. The cut songs, watered-down scripts, removed characters, over-simplified score and arrangements and, in my opinion, horrible direction/choreography all make this version a disservice to the original work. It's really an amazing, funny show with a great score and a witty book. They had such great source material to go from... Oh, well.

maybethistime, i'm surprised, i've always heard the opposite: that this is generally considered some very weak material.
anyway, this is my first exposure and i really like it!
