One-hit Wonders

Who are your favorite people who were involved in only one or two Broadway shows?

Number one for me is Jennifer Holiday from DREAMGIRLS, Colm Wilkinson, Hugh Jackman, and Cleavon Little from Purlie.

As for composers, I wish Burt Bacharach and Rupert Holmes had comnposed for Broadway more.

Heather Headley also was in THE LION KING. And she's only been away for a few years from AIDA so I don't think she can be qualified as a "One Hit Wonder". Give the girl some time to find a new project.

I don't think you can call Heather Headley a "one-hit wonder" either. The inference with the term "one-hit wonder" is that everything you did after your big hit flopped.

Broadway isn't the only measure of success. Colm Wilkinson was only on Broadway for Les Miz, but he had quite an illustrious career before on the other side of the Atlantic (including originating the role of Che on the concept album of Evita, and being the prototype Phantom before Michael Crawford). He also starred in Phantom for many years in Toronto before retiring.

I am not sure if he was a "One-Hit Wonder", as I am not familiar with his West End credits, but when you bring up people associated strongly with one particular role, it is almost impossible not to mention Ron Moody as Fagin in OLIVER.

Um . . . . Every heard of a show called "Your Arms Too Short To Box With God"? It was the first time that I saw Jennifer Holliday on Broadway.

And as for Clevon Little, he did "I'm Not Rappaport" for a few years with Judd Hirsch.

He also did "All Over Town" and "Jimmy Shine" plus a few others that closed after short runs.

I can't imagine bigger one-hit wonders than Jim Jacobs and Warren Casey, the authors of Grease.

Robert Goulet also did Kander & Ebb's "The Happy Time" on Broadway, plus lots of musicals on tour, including "On a Clear Day..." in L.A. with Joanna Gleason. She was wonderful; he did the entire show with his hands in his pockets...
Hugh Jackman will certainly be back on Broadway. He was fab in both "Sunset Boulevard" and "Beauty and the Beast" in Australia, and of course "Oklahoma" in London.

I was just inferring that Goulet has made his entire career out of CAMELOT. On both Lancelot and Arthur. But you are most certainly right, he isn't technically a "one-hit-wonder"

And, oh would I have loved to see Joanne Gleason in ON A CLEAR DAY...

Hugh Jackman's problem is to have enough time for both his movie career and the theatre. Hey, maybe a movie musical would be a good compromise once in a while?

Speaking of making a career out of one show...Yul Brynner in "The King & I" comes to mind. Although he appeared in 'Lute Song' in 1946, and was in a one-performance turkey called "Home Sweet Homer" back in the mid 70's, he really only had one stage role he was identified with. Sadly, he was only 65 when he died back in 1985.

I still think Alan Campbell fits the bill perfectly. He was supposed to be the next Broadway golden child when he came onto the scene as Joe in Sunset Boulevard in LA and NY. Since then, the only times he's dallied in the world of Broadway were a brief stint in the final months of CONTACT and, of course, his being married to Lauren Kennedy.

Carlin Glynn as Miss Mona in "Best Little *house in Texas". Won the Tony and then never returned to Broadway.

How about Richard O'Brien ("The Rocky Horror Show")? He attempted to do a sequel to RHPS that was a huge failure.
