I never said he was talented at singing, but his talents put together (writing, dancing ect.) made him a model for all things Broadway.

My answer is based on the last around 7-8 years from when I first started to learn about Broadway.

Kristin Chenoweth

I saw her in YAGMCB and Wicked and she is the best performer I have ever seen.

Female: Susan Egan
Male: Ah geez. I absolutely adore Hunter Foster and Norbert Leo Butz...but I'm not sure if I'd say that they're the best.

Actually, that's a really hard question. A lot of the older performers were absolutely brilliant...but the more current ones are easier to compare to one another.

Out of the people I have seen (I am not quite old enough to have seen Merman or some of the other legneds of her time), as probably expected, Donna Murphy. She has proven her versatility as an actress, and has a beautiful voice.

This is my first post after being a long-time lurker (and lover)of this message board. While I agree that Liza has wowed me on stage many times, I have to say that Judy Garland (and her three record breaking one-woman shows at the Palace Theater)is in my opinion the greatest performer to have appeared on Broadway.

I can't answer this without being biased. There are performers who are considered the best and all that, for multiple reasons.

If I answered, I'd get yelled at.

What was I thinking?
AndyHardy, you are one hundred per cent correct.
It is Judy Garland.

Angela Lansbury, and (all though they did not PERFORM as far as I KNOW) (little disclaimer in case I am wrong about this) the work of Bob Fosse and Jerome Robbins

When someone blunders, we say that he makes a misstep. Is it then not clear that all the ills of mankind, all the tragic misfortunes that fill our history books, all the political blunders, all the failures of the great leaders have arisen merely from a lack of skill in dancing. - Moliere

Judy wasn't in any Broadway shows, so that's why I didn't say her. If you count the Palace, Judy is BY FAR the most talented.

I just noticed that we have a new poster among us...so I wanted to make sure he received a warm BWW welcome!

Especially because he thinks that Judy Garland is the greatest performer to have performed on Broadway. As do I!

Welcome AndyHardy! I hope you love it here as much as I do.

I second George M. Cohen. What other song and dance man WROTE their own material, many of which are classics in the true sense.

And he sings every bit as good as, say, Nathan Lane. Especially when you consider how rudimentary recording techniques were then.

Out of the people I've seen, Idina and Bernadette and Orfeh for the ladies and Robert Evans and Matthew Bogart for the men.

I agree with Veuve Clicquot that Donna Murphy's performance in PASSION was one of the most moving performances on broadway. I wasn't old enough at the time to see it when it was playing on broadway, but I have the DVD and went to the Benefit Concert. I will never ever forget her performance as Fosca.

DancerGirl16,

Both Fosse and Robbins did actually perform on Broadway, in addition to direct and choreograph: Fosse starred in a revival of Pal Joey back in the 60s and a few years before that in a revue -- he also danced in several films, such as Kiss Me Kate (with Carol Haney, who later came to prominence dancing his "Steam Heat" number in Pajama Game), My Sister Eileen (with Tommy Rall) and to his own choreography in "Damn Yankees" (with wife and muse Gwen Verdon in "Who's Got The Pain"); Robbins performed in a series of successful ballet revues that ran on Broadway in the 30s and 40s.
