Only Men Aloud Rock!

Just got back from the first night of the Only Men Aloud tour - and, in one word, it was FAN-F***ING-TASTIC!
A wide range of songs from pop songs through folk songs to musical theatre - and every second was incredible.

re: Only Men Aloud Rock!

Where did these guys come from?
Sorry but I leave this planet now and again.

re: Only Men Aloud Rock!

You must have left the planet for quite a long time to have missed seeing them LOL. They were the winners of BBC's "Last Choir Standing" and have been on numerous TV shows since then as well as singing with Josh Groban during last year's Royal Variety Show.

The choir master and pianist/arranger are lecturers as the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama and the choir members are a mixture of performing arts students and guys with "regular" jobs (one is a pharmacist, etc.). They are essentially an amatuer choir but there is nothing in any way amateurish about their performance.

re: Only Men Aloud Rock!

Thanks Bob-just wondering what time I'll be battling through Saturday night Cardiff to get home :)

Mama, they've been around a while and performed at many Welsh events often with Singer/actress Sian Cothi, under their Welsh name, which escapes me right now. They also have a 'sister' choir called 'Serendipity' who they've also performed with in the past, but it was as Bob says on the BBC's last choir standing they became really 'famous'.

re: Only Men Aloud Rock!

lol.

Mama they tend to sing a lot of what you'd call pop 'standards' with a bit of musical theatre thrown in. They translate a lot of that into Welsh and also sing more traditional stuff occasionally. On their album they have 'Don't rain on my parade' 'All by myself' 'MacArthur Park' 'Angels'God only knows'Bridge over troubled water' 'Your a lady' 'Cwm Rhondda' 'One voice' 'Kiss from a rose' and 'Have yourself a merry little Christmas'

re: Only Men Aloud Rock!

Is there an album, they sound 'different'.
I like the idea of numbers in Welsh. I'm very patriotic.

re: Only Men Aloud Rock!

Yes there is an album, it's on amazon and I believe all good music shops (if you can find one still open) bellow is their website. They are different, a new twist on the male voice choir tradition, with a bit of musical theatre razzle dazzle thrown in :) I'd imagine there's some clips of them on the tv show online too.

re: Only Men Aloud Rock!

Their first album was a Gold disk. And Tim announced from the stage last night that they are about to go into the studio to commence recording their second album, which will be out in the summer. The second album will be largely traditional Welsh male voice choir material.

I'm not generally a fan of male voice choirs - especially when they try to sing musical theatre. They tend to make musical theatre songs sound like Welsh funeral hymns lol. But Only Men Aloud make Welsh hymns sound like musical theatre!

The arrangements often reinvent classic songs - whether they be Welsh hymns, well known folk songs, pop songs, rock songs or musical theatre songs.

re: Only Men Aloud Rock!

After going to the CIA concert on Saturday I wholeheartedly agree Only Men Aloud Rock! A really great concert the choir are a real 'hair on end' experience, I loved their 'Musical theatre' section, glad to see they're keeping that part of their repotoire and glad to hear Tim saying how important he thinks that is.

There was also a special energy of the 'home crowd' feel Cardiff had, which was lovely.

We were also treated to a special performance by.....Bonnie Tyler! Well the crowd went wild for her, I must confess I didn't, I'm a bit young to remember her but I will say she's still got a very powerful belt on her!

Amy Nuttall was also great as their guest, though they had some mike issues so we heard a bit of her warm up too!

re: Only Men Aloud Rock!

My sister went to school with Bonnie Tyler and we go to her house every Christmas morning for champagne and breakfast nibbles.
