They are open to the public with a very limited number of tickets. The bigger deal the show is, the less likely you are to be able to get tickets to the opening.
For example, because Showtime produced Mario Cantone's Laugh Whore there were only a tiny number of tickets available to the general public.... and the ACL opening will be nearly impossible!

The only opening I've ever been to was Long Day's Journey into Night, because they had a free ticket giveaway for students.
Wasn't Sweet Charity's opening up on TDF?!?! I seem to remember that being the case, but I couldn't make it because I had a final or something that night.

I've been to a few opening nights and it's an amazing experience. My favorite was "Little Me" revival with Faith and Martin. Amazing!
I like to go to closings too. I went to the closing of the Lippa Wild Party and it was really moving. There is something about the energy of an opening or closing night that is just so palpable.

"I lie to go to closings too."
I don't understand...what are you telling them to get in?

The only opening nights I've attended were Rodgers and Hamemrstein's ME AND JULIET and PIPE DREAM, Dietz and Schwartz' THE GAY LIFE (now known as THE HIGH LIFE), and Rodgers and Sondheim's DO I HEAR A WALTZ? For the Rodgers shows I sent checks to the Rodgers and Hammerstein office as soon as the productions were announced...a year ahead for ME AND JULIET. For THE GAY LIFE, I bought two opening night tickets that afternoon. Somewhere I have some 8mm film that I took at the PIPE DREAM opening...the curtain calls and all the celebrities in Shubert Alley after the show. Unfortunately, I no longer have a movie projector even if I could find the film

That sounds like a great memory - I am jealous!
I've been to a bunch of opening performances. They are fun.
Even THE BOY FROM OZ and WICKED had tickets for sale for their opening shows - and THE BOY FROM OZ was on TKTS. I didn't get my tickets from there, but my friend did - and I was amazed to hear it.

Posted: 7/12/06 at 4:48pmI never see them available on Telecharge... Where do you get the tickets from?

Posted: 7/12/06 at 5:16pm^Telecharge usually releases the last of the tickets the night before opening night. I've never been so lucky to get one. Definatly check Telecharge the night before and a few hours before the performance.
