If Front row mezz is available, I will almost always grab it. After that, it's really a toss up -- I try to balance sightlines with distance.
If I can be in the front 10 rows of the orch, center or on the side aisle, I'm also damn happy.

The only show I insisted on sitting orchestra for was Hair. I love sitting orchestra when I can but I don't care as long as I can see the stage, I'm happy.
Orchestra. Within the first 8 rows.
I've only sat in the upper section once--student rush tickets at the U.S. premiere production of Ragtime at L.A.'s Shubert. Reba Macintyre was sitting in the row in front of us! I had to dodge her red locks to see at certain points, lol.
At any rate, the view wasn't terrible but I recall thinking how artificial the orchestra and voices sounded. It was also interesting to see all of Eugene Lee's stage deck action. That set was crazy automated.
Compared to orchestra and up close at at an eye level where most designers and directors base their work on, never again. I've been a faithful orchestra ("stalls" for you UK peeps) er...sitter since 1997!! XD

I prefer the front of the Orchestra, within 10-15 rows if possible.
It really depends on the theater though. In my experiences of sitting in the mezzanine/balcony, some were good experiences, some were bad. Off the top of my head, I sat in the rear mezzanine for The Producers and loved the show nevertheless. For Catch Me If You Can, I sat in the Orchestra and then also saw another show in the third row of the mezzanine, and thought the view was great there too. However, when I saw Mary Poppins in the mezzanine, I really felt that it wasn't a good view. It wasn't horrible because I didn't really miss anything, but I didn't feel as connected to the show. And I've heard that for a theater as big as the Majestic (where my sister sat in the rear mezzanine), you might feel that you miss more being so far away.
Personally, I love seeing facial expressions of the actors on stage, so I prefer the front of the Orchestra.

Mid orchestra is the best for me. I like to see the whole stage in one look but still able to see the actors and actresses. I've sat in mezz but like others say, it really depends on the theater.
