The LION KING?
WTF?! Ughhhh.

"You get to watch the original cast of RENT sing together for probably the last time"
Some of us have seen the original cast many times: live, on the Letterman show, on every other show. It was great then, now it's just tired. And the fact that it's the original cast, all of them too old at this point to be playing starving artists in the East village.

Is it going to be the actual orignal cast or is it going to be like the movie where only the principals were considered part of the original cast?
Maybe they'll replace Daphne Rubin-Vega again too.
And explain to me in what way it'd be nice to open the Tonys with "Seasons of Love"?
I rather them open with a couple of young performers singing "Let Me Entertain You" and have LuPone walk down the aisles of Radio City screaming "Sing out, Louise!" Now THAT'S a way to open a ceremony.
Why weren't the rest of the performences announced in that article.

It's a concert performance. That makes about enough sense as complaining Bernadette Peters was too female to sing Being Alive at Carnegie Hall.

OMG yes. This just confirms my suspicions that a handful of BWW posters could write a better ceremony.

Yeah except the role of Patti should be played by Whoopi.
That's a great idea.
You see? WE should write the Tonys (and by "we" I don't mean the people suggesting "Seasons of Love" as a way to open the ceremony).
Why The Lion King and Rent? Both shows have had long runs. A Catered Affair won't have a ten year run. Why not give it a performance spot instead of two cash-cows?
I really think we could write a better Tony ceremony than those who actually do. What better way to start a theatre show than to have one of the classic musicals about backstage theatre open the telecast?
I see nothing wrong with this. I don't see any logical reason for them to show a song from A Catered Affair. (Granted from what I have heard I thought that the songs in that show are weak and the show would have been better as a play. But, I digress) One of the major problems CBS has had with airing the Tonys year in and year out is that it doesn't do a good job of getting a new audience. The same crop of people watch it every year because they are theatre fans. Other then that no one watches it which has been part of the ongoing problem. So, why air a song from A Catered Affair?
On a separate note, I am glad to see that Rent is going to be honored at the Tonys. It really is a groundbreaking musical and it is a good thing that it is going to be honored at the Tonys during its final few months on Broadway.
And as for the lion king. I don't think that ten years on Broadway is something to scoff at so I can see why they are honoring the show by having them perform at the awards.
I'm excited.

I think it's great! If it can draw in new viewers and make it more likely the Tony Awards will continue to be televised, I'm for it. Actually, I'm for it just because it seems logical to honor those shows.
It would seem logical, imo, if other non-nominated shows recieved the spots before long running shows do.
The thing about the Tony Awards is that over the years the quality has gone down. One way to rejuvinate the old spark is to start honoring things other than Rent and Lion King. They have (had) great runs, but they're over now. Why not focus on the shows that are, and aren't nominated THIS year. We're not talking about the shows that started ten or fifteen years ago, we're honoring those that have started this year.
The fact of the matter is...even if they DID showcase some of these shows you guys are mentioning...theres no WAY they would become Post-Tony Blockbusters...it just won't happen.
I'm fine with all this, as long as they find room to honor THIS year's shows with performances, or something just as good (A Catered Affair, even Young Frankenstein and Little Mermaid!)
Maybe they'll do like a few years ago and have Bernadette Peters showcase (thru a montage of clips) musicals that are not performing.
this seems no different to me than the 97 tony opening taht featured the casts of rent, smokey joe's cafe, cats, and bring in da noise. Having the show open with the circle of life might get a few more people to sit down and watch, and frankly i think thats what cbs is aiming at.
plus, remember that The Lion King's official 10th anniversary celebration was cancelled due to the strike. Maybe that has something to do with it.
love the line up but dont get the Lion King bit. What, are the Tonys birthday parties for musicals now?
