He just said on THE VIEW that his first show was PHANTOM but he later saw RENT which inspired him.

"This is a celebration of two shows that have been Broadway Smash hits!"
BWAHAHAHAHA!! THIS is an EXCUSE to have two extremely popular musicals perform on the telecast to try and bring in more ratings, disguised as "a celebration of two shows that have been Broadway Smash hits!"
There's nothing that says both of those statements can't be true.
I am sorry I may have been mistaken but in the interview on LOGO he specifically said that RENT inspired him to write In the Heights with what he knew.... Latin Music and Hip Hop and his home.

Sounds good, nmartin.
Oh, I don't know what other song they could perform... a medley, "La Vie Boheme" (granted it would have to be censored, but still). ANYTHING.
My mom will be happy, though. She adores "Seasons of Love."
I hate myself.
You're not alone.
Couldn't they do Finale B?
Anyway, who cares? If it boosts ratings and CBS decides to keep broadcasting the show then I'm all for it.

I was going to add Legally Blonde, but they got enough air time between the MTV Premiere and the reality tv show, which I'm sure they'll plug at the Tonys. LoveMusik never really found the general public.
Well why not celebrate a real milestone...Like 20 years for Phantom? 10 years is nothing these days.
Because Phantom just had their own special Tony performance in 2006?

They could do Finale B. I hope they do, but I doubt it.

"...an EXCUSE to have two extremely popular musicals perform on the telecast to try and bring in more ratings...."
Who said they're making an EXCUSE? This is their way of inviting and telling other people, aka people who don't watch the Tonys, to tune it that night. Not an EXCUSE.

Rent is so mid-1990s. It's time to go away. We don't need an original cast performance. We don't need a Rent performance at all.

Rent is phenomenal and I can't wait to watch the original cast tho Seasons of Love is the weakest song in the show.
The only way I could be excited about this is if Daphne Rubin-Vega pulls out the blue pants, gets on the balcony at Radio City and sings the SH*T out of "Out Tonight." Otherwise, I'll be rolling my eyes so far up when they perform "Seasons of Love" or "La Vie Boheme" that I'll miss the whole thing.
Seriously, just move the Tonys to PBS and that way we could get a Sondheim tribute (since he is getting his Lifetime Achievement Award) instead of the 30-somethings pretending they are teenagers singing an incredibly annoying song.
Does anyone REALLY think this is going to boost ratings? Really?
If these musical numbers preempt some tacky tribute to classic showtunes by people who have no business singing on the Tony Awards, I'm cool with it.
Why the hell is everyone complaining?
You get to watch the original cast of RENT sing together for probably the last time, and you get to see the Lion King preform for free.
What the hell is wrong with that, honestly!
It seems you can never win on this board.
This is great news especially for Rent
To many people on here seem to forget what this show did and changed, its nice it is being honored
What's this about A Catered Affair and one vote?
And this blows.
According to Michael Riedel, CRY-BABY beat out the nomination over A CATERED AFFAIR by one vote. They originally tied and had to re-vote.
I have no problem with LION KING and RENT performing - I look forward to them. But why not shows that NEED the publicity, such as A CATERED AFFAIR?
Well I'll admit it, I'm a sucker, I was not planning to watch, now I am, so there. lol
as for the Phantom thing, to be honest 2006 was really about Hal Prince and having the Phantom number screwed up because of bad timing just sucks.
I'm a huge Lion King fan and cant wait to see what they will do, although they probably will do Circle of Life again
I thought Young Frankenstein and The Little Mermaid were more likely to perform on the telecast since they're probably the most commercial shows that opened this season.
I bet Rent will either do Seasons of Love or an abbreviated version of La Vie Boheme, so I'm kind of indifferent to them performing.
They should do what they did at their Tonys
Buscee..if 10 years is nothing...care to post on here how many CURRENT Broadway shows have run for 10+ years?
It may be nice to open the show with "Seasons of Love."
Like we need to hear THAT song again.
