Posted: 4/3/13 at 8:30pmI saw this last Sat night. The performances by the cast were amazing, but honestly did not love the play. I have to say that both acts did go by very quickly.

I saw Friday night's show and absolutely loved it. Alec Baldwin didn't particularly do anything for me, but I thought the two boys were committed and gave ferocious performances. Tom Sturridge in particular; he is sensational and haunting.
In my opinion Sturridge will skyrocket to the front of the Featured Actor in a Play race, if that's where he ends up... although I'm interested to know what you all think about the Tony placements for these three, since they mostly get equal play.

Posted: 4/11/13 at 11:23pmI was surprised by how engaged the packed house was at the performance I attended. They were into it - lots of buzz at the first act curtain and overwhelmingly positive comments overheard as we were filing out at the end. For me it's a solid production of an okay play, not a huge disappointment like Sullivan's GLENGARRY. Sturridge is the standout in the most sympathetic role, and Foster does well by Treat. Am I correct that this is Baldwin's first Broadway bow since his 30 ROCK success? His performance here points to the hazards of portraying a single character (especially a stock sitcom role, however well-played) for such a long time. Part of Baldwin's job as an actor now, fair or not, is to make us forget the public image, the tabloid headlines, Jack Donaghy, etc., and I think he's unsuccessful here. Part of this is due to the fact that TV tends to squeeze the juice out of even talented actors, but I also think he hasn't really dug deep enough into his character. There's no surprise or shading to his performance. I expect the reviews to reflect this with praise for his co-stars and a less enthusiastic assessment of Baldwin's performance.

I saw this Saturday night and found it very moving. For me, as Cheetos said earlier, Sturridge was the standout. I found his performance amazing. And it's a very tricky role. The character of Phillip is obviously impaired in some way, and I think it would be easy for an actor's portrayal to descend into some kind of caricature. I think Sturridge captured Phillip perfectly, and his physicality was very expressive of the character, someone with energy to spare who's basically imprisoned. I interpreted the play as a family drama, with Harold stepping in as the father figure. That's so ironic given that he didn't have a father himself. In his vastly imperfect way, Harold fathered the two boys and opened their minds to what their lives could become.
