Brittany Murphy was supposed to sing Kander & Ebb? I assume she has some musical theater training.
It seems they were going for any pretty blonde they could get to play Charity, glad they chose the right one.
I think it's unfair that they'd close this show because the theater is in demand, I mean, the score is so beautiful in its old-fashioned Broadway sound, it's one of those pieces that really provide the Broadway experience, and they want to close it to bring The Wedding Singer? That's rather unfair. Ohhh, can they get Ruthie Henshall to play Charity? LOL, that was just a random thought that crossed my mind, sounds impossible.

"I didn't know Kristin Chenoweth was up to play Roxie, I don't think back when the movie was released her name was big enough to carry the movie..."
Thats cause she wasn't. Kristin was up for Mary Sunshine, not Roxie, and she still is not a big enough name.
As for the above names. Paula was a different revival. Marisa, Jenna, and Jane were all pretty much who the Weislers were going with at each time in its development. Jane came the closest to it actually going forward, then the Neil Simon thing happened. My personal vote is for Bebe who I would have killed to see do the role back in the 80's,(on a performance Debi was out) age or not she still got it. But atlas that won't happen.

Well, someone else mentioned Chenoweth as Roxie, that's where my comment came from. I would have actually loved to see her as Mary Sunshine, she'd have been great in the role in my opinion.
I agree that Bebe Neuwirth should play Charity, who cares if she's too old for this role(is she?)?

Posted: 10/19/05 at 12:01amRay I am just speculating here but I thought I heard they went with Christine Baranski to go with the whole man route of the show, just shy of the reveal. But we all know Kristen would have been able to sing the crap out of the role, maybe those parts would have stayed in the move.

The final choice for ROXIE was between Rene Z. and Toni Collette, which is interesting as Toni Collette knocked back BRIDGET JONES as she was going into THE WILD PARTY and didn't know how long it would run. This is according to a story that I've seen repeated in three different papers in the last week.

Posted: 10/19/05 at 1:21amOk I have to respond again...I saw the audition video of TONI, she was A MA ZING! It is still hard for me to fully enjoy Chicago knowing how wonderful Toni was and how the dynamic between her and Catherine would have been unvelievable, damn Harvey and Miramax.

Sorry, w/o seeing the Chicago movie in recent months, what party is Mary Sunshine? As in, what exactly does she do? Thanks. Also, I think they're probably going to close Charity and make back their investment on tour, I don't think the Weisslers are concerned with making their money back on this show, as they know they will eventually.
However, I think Brittany Murphy would be awesome to see on stage. I heard her sing at one of the MTV Movie Awards shows and she killed. She was great.
Also, what do you think of Kristen Bell from Veronic Mars? I know she can't sing like amazingly, but I think she could pull it off. Not sure about the dancing.

Posted: 10/19/05 at 2:57amMary Sunshine is the journalist that sings in "We Both Reached For The Gun," and that at first interviews Velma Kelly but then focuses on Roxie. I wish I could see Toni Collette auditioning for Chicago, but honestly I think Renee Zellweger did a fantastic job in this movie. Maybe she should try and do "Charity," do you guys really think that a tour of "Charity" sans Applegate would make back the show's investment?

Posted: 10/19/05 at 6:08amApplegate would have been a much better Roxie!

Posted: 10/19/05 at 10:58amJenna Elfman was "cast" in Nine too but it turned out that she had a tin ear and couldn't sing a note in tune. That's how Sarah Gettelfinger got to play Carla. There's no way Elfman could have done Charity.

Posted: 10/19/05 at 11:22amI still don't understand how Jenna Elfman was ever expected to play Carla, when it is obvious that she can't sing.
