GYPSY!
3 pages with a huge one left off- Chicago
Thank you, frontrowcentre2, for clarifying the distinction between overtures and preludes. And it's a shame that there are people who don't pay attention to the overtures--it's such a big part of what makes musical theater so amazing!
...it's such a big part of what makes musical theater so amazing
And it is one part of the form that seems to be slipping away from us. Maybe because younger audiences have not been brought up being taken to pops and light classical concerts. In this age of video games and other distractions, it seems that to simply sit and listen to music without any visuals is considered "boring." Maybe that is the answer: Have an Overture but stage it with action happening bhind the scrim - an opening ballet of some sort.
But I agree - for a traditional musical comedy, nothing can be as exciting as lively Overture to kick start the performance.
Cast albums are NOT "soundtracks."
Live theatre does not use a "soundtrack." If it did, it wouldn't be live theatre!
I host a weekly one-hour radio program featuring cast album selections as well as songs by cabaret, jazz and theatre artists. The program, FRONT ROW CENTRE is heard Sundays 9 to 10 am and also Saturdays from 8 to 9 am (eastern times) on www.proudfm.com
Overatures seem like they are becoming a thing of the past with some of the new shows popping up with limited or no overatures.
"Gypsy" has the best and most popular overature - they even left it in the filmed versions!
"Chicago" and "Mack & Mabel" are fabulous, I must say when I hear a good overature I am usually in for a good show, Yes, "Dirty Rotten Scoundrels" is fine as well!
I say, "More Overatures Please".

Did you know that the so-called "Overture" from Chicago is of a song that was deleted from the show? It took place where "Hot Honey Rag" is now, but instead of Velma and Roxie dancing, Velma was on drums, and Roxie was on sax and the song was called "Looping the Loop." Even though it was funny, the audience was confused about whether it was intentionally supposed to be bad, or unintentionally.

jasobres--I didn't know that! When did they take it out of the show?
Piazza, WSS, and Millie.
This is a weird one, but Seussical the Musical is my fave because it starts out with the instuments warming up, and then it goes into this rock guitar solo thing, and I can just picture this whole awesome classical gone rock thing in my mind, and it sets an awesome start for the musical.
