I was curious to know what Paul Vogt was like in Hairspray. So I did a search on "the site that cannot be named" and found a video clip of the Hairspray regional premiere. the girl who played Tracy sucked (not sure if this is the same girl currently on broadway... but i was really bugged by how awful Paul was in the clip. I mean... awful awful awful. Half the time u couldnt even hear his "singing" (if u could call it that). no charm or humor like harvey.
has anyone seen him on broadway? how is he? am i misjudging him based on that clip?

that is sad because he was always a wonderful woman on MadTv and I thought he would do good.
Remember when he played Diana Degarmo? haha

Posted: 3/19/07 at 8:55pmWell, the clip you saw didn't do him justice. I saw him at North Shore Music Theatre (the regional premiere) and he was fantastic. Bridie Carroll (Tracy) was as well.

It is really rude to say people "sucked" judging from a clip.
The clip from North Shore was taken from a dress rehearsal of a long week.
Paul has great energy and comedic timing. He keept the audience entertained and laughing the entire show.
Paul was asked to audition for the role based on his performances as Edna and how well he was received.
People need to have more of an open mind and realize the original cast of every show cannot stay with it forever. Different actors have different ways of portraying characters. Not everyone is going to have that scratchy voice that you cant understand like Harvey.

i never said everyone had to be exactly like the original... its very rude of you to assume i said that... all i said was, based on the clip i saw, he seemed like a very weak link.
thats why i asked if anyone else had seen him? because i didnt want to judge him only on that clip. and as echoed by several posters... they agreed that he was not very good.

Posted: 3/19/07 at 9:29pmIf by "several" you mean that one said they didn't like him, one said he was okay, and one said he was fantastic. That's hardly several agreeing that he wasn't very good.

Sorry. It is broadway. He should be nothing short of brilliant.

lol... its kind of funny how so many people on this board seem to be suffering a constant endless menstrual cramp. some of ya'll get so defensive and bitter with everything thats written.
i come on here to ask about a performer because i'm interested in seeing the show again, and people get so bent out of shape over something i say. lol. just so funny to me...

Posted: 3/19/07 at 9:47pmWell, I've seen many performances on Broadway where the performance hasn't even benn broadway worthy (I'm not even going to bring up other people in Hairspray the last time I saw it). In my opinion, his was. I've seen Hairspray 4 times and he wasn't the worst Edna, but he wasn't the best either.

Posted: 3/19/07 at 9:50pmI saw him a month and a half ago and thought he was quite good.

Well.. that is different. You said you didn't think he was too bad. Which implies that it is not up to snuf.

Posted: 3/19/07 at 9:54pmOk. He was good, not the best, but still broadway worthy. Is that clear enough?

Posted: 3/19/07 at 11:09pmI read good things about Paul C. Vogt's Edna, but I was sooo disappointed when I saw him last month! He made the character sort of unlikable! He let the lines speak for them self too much and didn't say them in a funny manner. I felt like Edna didn’t have much of a sense of humor. I preferred Blake Hammond so much more! I saw Blake 4 times! I can't believe they didn't re-sign him.

Posted: 3/19/07 at 11:11pmI agree about Blake. He's my favorite Edna!

He got his start playing the Fred Flintstone walk-around character at Universal Studios Hollywood, wearing what basically was a dress. I guess it's come full circle.

Posted: 3/20/07 at 12:05pmHe's wonderful. He is more on par with Divine than any of the previous Ednas (I haven't seen Harvey, so take that as the exception). Blake Hammond was positively the WORST Edna.

Posted: 3/20/07 at 12:14pmActually, before Hollywood he was a performer at Disney/MGM Studios and hilarious playing multiple characters. He and his twin brother were in the series "Maximum Bob" with Beau Bridges. Before MAD TV he was on the "Re-Run Show" where he played Shirley Partridge and Mrs. Garrett. He is a very talented and funny individual.
