Posted: 3/20/07 at 12:56pmI’m sorry that I did not get a chance to see Harvey Fierstein as Edna but my favorite was John Pinette with Blake Hammond a very close second. Paul is very good but sometimes he lets his voice get too deep. But like John and Blake, Paul is very funny at the stage door.

i saw "Hairspray" at the height of its popularity... i remember we showed up the the theater to try and win the lotto tickets and there were 300 plus people there. we were in shock. we could barely even make it up to the front to sign up for the lotto. we thought we had no chance in hell at winning... i was the last name called!!! my wife went crazy screaming with excitement.
i remember walking away from the show with all the songs stuck in my head and a big nice feeling of satisfaction. it was just a great time. everyone in the cast was great... but to me... harvey, with his insanely raspy voice, was the highlight. even tho he cant sing wortha lick cuz of his voice, he was funny as hell and his voice made the songs funnier.

I can say that I had the opportunity to see every Edna so far featured on Broadway (no understudies). They each brought something wonderfully different to the role. There was one who wasn't my favorite, but that doesn't necessarily mean he was bad.
Cubanpab, the first time I saw Hairspray was during the holidays a few months after it opened. I believe it was a special Monday performance and when I went to the box office the day of the show I ended up with a great 5th row center seat. I was so excited because I know how difficult it was to get tickets to this.

Just to let you know cubanpab:
Bridie Carroll, the girl in the video who "sucked" as Tracy, was awarded BEST ACTRESS IN A MUSICAL from the Independent Reviewers of New England for her work in HAIRSPRAY and show won Best Musical.
Maybe you should question your abitity to judge quality.

The Independent Reviewers of New England award?? omg! i had no idea... wow. ok that really changes everything... i just rewatched the clip and i thought she was fabulous!
thank god for the Independent Reviewers of New England! if it wasnt for them i would have judged her based on my personal taste. and obviously i should only judge based on who wins an award...
but can i ask one thing? does that mean i have to like Idina Menzel just because she won the Tony? please... please dont make me.

Posted: 3/20/07 at 9:16pmFlaunt It, that was a little harsh...and then, so was I. Bridie Carroll was much, much better in person, though, than she was in that clip...she must've been having an off night when they filmed it.

"flaunt"... of course i'm being sarcastic. just being playful... i'm not like some of the people on here who get mad and pissed off easily... lol... so i was just joking with you.
that being said... of course i cant judge one person based on just one performance... all i was saying was, based on that clip... the girl who was playing tracy didnt impress me... but mostly i was commenting on Vogt, who in my opinion, was awful in that clip... just based on that clip!
thats why i created this post. i figured several people on here had probably seen him on broadway already. and i was curious to see what they thought of him.
and in the end everyone has different taste... for example, and i'm sure i'll get killed for this... i happen to love love LOVE Kristin Chenowith when i see her in interviews. i think shes adorable, funny, sexy... etc. but when i see her perform or hear her sing, i wanna puncture my ear drums with a pencil... i think shes incredibly shrill and annoying when she sings... but many people think she's a singing God. go figure.
so everyone has dif opinions. and thats OK! :)

I've seen Harvey, Blake and Paul all play Edna. Personally, I think Paul is hilarious and puts a much needed fresh spin on the role. And for the record, he certainly can sing. Of course he does things differently than Harvey & Blake -- that is what is REQUIRED from the actor playing Edna. Edna must be played by someone who can be creative and use their own comedic timing.
What would really suck is if he just did a cheap imitation of whoever played it before to satisfy people who don't like change.

Posted: 3/20/07 at 9:52pmThe only problem with Paul Vogt is that the actor who plays WIlbur (the guy from Dear John) is dragging him down. They have no chemistry, and Dear John Guy just seems to be there to collect a check. Edna really has to have fantastic chemistry with Wilbur to work properly, and Paul is clearing trying to make both roles look good without any help from Dear John Guy.

cubanpab, Why did you feel the need to comment on someone then if you never even saw them in the production?
Making comments such as you must have menstral cramps is really a childish thing to say. How old are you ten? Im sure your "wife" would appreciate a comment like that. Along with your comments about how people sucked. If you dont like someone back up your reasoning dont just say they sucked because people are going to wonder why your are such a jerk.
Its almost like you posted something about Paul simply to let people know how bad he is. Did you honestly want other peoples opinion? Come on
For someone who doesnt even live in NYC you talk alot of crap about shows you must have seen clips of!

Fosse, your are correct. Jere Burns looks like he is just going through the motions. Steve LaRose worked with John and Blake, over the past year, and had very good chemisty with both; but that is another subject.

makan... makan, makan, makan... lol... where to begin. lol lol. obviously my "menstrual cramps" comment was a joke... i was being sarcastic... joking... being funny... playing around... are you sure you're not the 10 year old? because anyone could see i was clearly joking.
and just to clarify... i'm 25 and married. i dont have a "wife"... i have a wife. wanna see our wedding photos... visit our website, monandpab.com. :) i'm a very lucky guy. beautiful wife and a great family.
also, i didnt know you had to live in NYC in order to be a "real" theater fan... i didnt know u had to live in NYC in order to have a valid opinion of broadway.
i saw hairspray... with the OBC. in 2003. i've seen alot of theater over the years and both my wife and i consider ourselves fans and followers. we visit NYC several times a year to catch up on some shows. i never said Paul Vogt sucked... i only said he sucked in that 1 clip... thats why i started this thread. i wanted people who had actually seen the show to clarify... wanted to hear if others thought he was indeed good or bad.
i wasnt saying he sucked... i was asking if he sucked. because based on what he saw he didnt seem very good. big difference.
again... its hard not to laugh at your post. you got so bent out of shape over a simple comment i made. lol... seriously... i'm sorry for laughing but come on... how sad for you. lol lol.
