I went this afternoon to see it a second time.
I liked it even more than the first.
This film musical is finely done.

Phantom has made $57 million so far. It cost $70 million to make and the marketing costs are unknown- let's say $30 million for the sake of easy math. So going by the formula that a movie needs to make back twice its costs to break even, Phantom has $143 million to go.
Let's compare that again to Alexander- that movie cost $155 million and had about $40 million in marketing costs. So far it's made $79 million worldwide. It needs to make $311 million to make back its costs.
Of course, the other big factor in that comparison is that Alexander has been out since November 24 and spread to as many as 2,445 theaters in its widest release. Phantom has been out only since December 22 and spread to 622 theaters.
So which is the bigger flop? And if it was that easy for me to find a bigger flop from 2004, how the heck can we call Phantom the biggest flop of all time?
Psychology 101- people will bend the facts to make them fit into their worldview. People hate Phantom and want it to flop, so by golly, when they see a headline (even from a notoriously inaccurate source like IMDB) that says Phantom is a flop, they'll leap all over it. And numbers can be made to lie, too, especially when facts about them are taken as truisms with no analysis or comparison.
Like I've said way too many times, I hate Phantom. But the title of this thread is utterly ridiculous.

Posted: 1/9/05 at 3:58pmI loved the movie and have seen it twice (and I NEVER go to see a movie more than once). It is a phenominal movie! I plan on buying it when it is released on DVD. I do agree with one thing said in the prior post -- the title of this thread is utterly ridiculous.

Posted: 1/9/05 at 4:01pmI don't think anyone seriously believes that the PHANTOM movie is "one of the biggest flops of all time"; by god, there have been much bigger duds than this one. I don't think Hollywood is paying all that much attention to this movie at all.

Posted: 1/9/05 at 4:12pmIt will get more attention. There are people saying they want to see it but it is too far away from them right now. I have to drive 2 hours to see it, so that is why I have only seen it twice. When it finally gets around me, I will see it a lot.

awww thanks... i was being mature and ignoring the thread cuz i didn't want to read it, but i broke down and when i saw what was said, i had to open my mouth... i hate how people try and make something they don't like into a failure when they have nothing factual to back themselves up.

I saw it for the second time the other night, and I appreciated it even more.
I am not a fan of Phantom the stage show. I think it is overblown, boring and far-fetched. I think the best thing about the movie is that it stops taking itself so seriously. It doesn't present itself as a true story, simply as entertainment. THAT is why I love the Masquerade sequence. It is so unlikely that it adds to the otherworldlyness of the piece.
The score is good, the lyrics are woeful and the story could be presented better. But by paying more homage to the book, they have at least fixed up a few of the plot holes and flaws that are in the stage show.
The first time I saw it was in the first week of its release. The theatre was almost dead. There were about 15 people there. When I went the other night, it was over half-full. Word of mouth is spreading, and people ARE going to see it, if nothing more than to see the gorgeous set and cinematography.
Sure it is not the greatest film in the world, but I found it enjoyable, and so are other people. This is not a bad film, and I for one don't hope it flops.
I think it deserves every award nomination it gets, and think it is the most underrated film of the year.
