Posted: 1/7/05 at 1:32amI was just curious as to what theatre folks thought about THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA becoming a movie. Any thoughts, comments, complaints?

Search! There's tons of stuff on the board about it.
I love this movie too much for my own good, though. Three times and counting.

I loved it. The board is split 50/50 on this one.
There were several things that I wish were different, yet despite all of those I still loved it. Its late and I can't go into details now, but there are many good and detailed reviews if you search past threads.

LOVE IT.
Have seen it four times--going again this weekend with another group friends who haven't seen it yet.
Have the double CD soundtrack.
I cry at the beginning with the auction...during the Final Lair...and during the final scene.
I love the cast but I particularly heart Patrick Wilson as Raoul.

I found it an overly literal adaptation that doesn't work nearly hard enough to make the material cinematic. Yes, the stuff that works -- the opening in particular -- owes a lot to the Hal Prince original. But the narrative holes are many, far more pronounced in this telling (that cemetary sequence!) and the 2 romantic characters seem more paper-thin and weak in motivation. Work on the story's nuances would've helped. I am in the minority in terms of the board, since I think the score is mostly well-sung and well served by the the singing. If only a screenwriter (and more inventive director) had found compelling ways to dramatize the story and flesh out these 2 inane people, Raoul and Christine.
By the way -- has anyone noticed the brand new tv ad? It has NO MUSICAL numbers. It's teeny bits of dialogue stitched together, suggesting a more traditional version of the old story--a total lie, since virtually the whole thing is sung.

Posted: 1/7/05 at 1:03pmI didn't like it...the theatrical production has made me cry, the movie didn't... I just didn't believe any of it, from the acting to the singing.

I liked the movie BUT really disliked Gerrard as the Phantom. I think he has a horrible voice and can't act. There is no excuse for haveing him in that role when that role has been one of the best sung roles since the show opened. I liked the ending and the design and the other people. Christine could have been a little stronger, but she was ok.
Finally, I am sorry, but with the mask off...the man is still hot and I wouldn't turn him away. OK???
Just my opinions!
