PHOTO FLASH! Stagedoor photos of Barbra at FUNNY GIRL!

What with the enslaught of people taking photos of actors at stagedoors, I thought it would be a nice surprise to showcase some vintage stagedoor photos of a 22 year old Barbra arriving at the Winter Garden Theatre's stagedoor for a performance of FUNNY GIRL.

Whatever became of her? Or that poodle, Sadie?

Hmmm.

I used to love staying at the Taft. Many of the rooms had double doors. Made of steel. The outer doors could be opened by the staff to put in food, papers, pick up shows for cleaning. The inner doors opened into the rooms. That was back when NYC was one dangerous town.

I can't say what happened to that young actress, but I think we can guess where the dog is now.

I thought her agent (and my former boss) got her a limo in the contract to take her to the theater. Producer Ray Stark was none-too-pleased.

That's funny that you have these photos; because, the night I saw her in that show, I also happened to see her arrive. She was just dropped off by someone. Not a limo or a taxi.

Here's the truth, allofmylife.

When Barbra first signed-on to play Fanny, David Merrick owned FUNNY GIRL at that time therefore she was contracted to him not Ray Stark. When David left the production, he took everything contractually linked to him, which included her. Without Barbra, Ray Stark had no show. Period.

When they realized this, Barbra and her managers hardballed Ray Stark a renegotiation which were on HER terms. She wanted a substantial increase in her weekly salary, a chauffered limousine to take her to and from performances, the services of her own personal hairdresser, and daily complimentary meals for two. Savy businessman that he was, Ray Stark called her bluff and she only got a minimal salary increase (a reported $5000 a week), and that's it. No chauffered limo, no personal hairdresser, no complimentary meals for two.

Haha...did anyone else immediately think of the Kathy Griffin routine about Streisand and her dead dog on Oprah?

Thanks for posting, I love seeing "lost" photos like these.

I remember hearing in an interview Streisand did where she talked about how she was always running late before each performance and never had enough time to warm up. So unlike her, I know. But anyway, she said that she would always take a taxi.

"always running late" - from what? Her long subway commute? Her day job? I never got how Broadway actors could be late to work, yet, so many are. You don't technically have to be there until 7:30 p.m. Why is that so difficult?

In the latest Oprah magazine, there is an interview with her, which includes a photo of her dog sitting at the head of a table set with many plates and party hats. It was the dog's third birthday party. No lie.

Freddie Fields, Barbra's agent (not manager) is the man who founded ICM was and is one of the toughest guys in Hollywood. I guarantee you he was no **** around Ray Stark. And if he did get Babs a $5,000 a week raise, in 1966 dollars, that's a "paltry" $30,103.09 in today's money (using the Consumer Price Index, 5,000 in total worth has the buying power today of 79,000.00).

As for the limo, I heard this entire story from people who work for him and since we never spoke in anything but hushed tones, I may have heard it wrong.

Although there was a lengthy artcle about this in the last year or two and I remember reading it there also and saying to myself, "wow, the tales were true."

Barbra's run in FUNNY GIRL (including pre-Broadway) was from February 1964 to December 1965 -- not 1966. Her salary of $5000 a week was based on her status at that time -- she obviously was considered an international star by 1966, therefore her income was noticeably way higher than it was for her Broadway FUNNY GIRL run.

Also, the photos don't lie, plus the tons of eye witnesses who saw her arrive and leave the Winter Garden nightly attest to never having seen a limousine transport her. Her comments from that period also confirm her 'no limousine' status -- I'm sure if asked today, she'd confirm this as she's quite overt about discussing her FUNNY GIRL Broadway run.

Freddie Fields' 'office staff' were as delusional as that myth. re: PHOTO FLASH! Stagedoor photos of Barbra at FUNNY GIRL!

These photos are great, thanks. I have a question about the Taft Hotel. I stayed there with my parents once but have no idea where it was. Anyone know?

A relative of mine had a ticket for "Funny Girl" during tryouts in Phila. & offered the ticket to me because she was ill. I turned it down because I never heard of Barbra....I still regret it!!!

Ooh, very interesting. Thanks for posting these. I was about to ask how long Barbra was with the show for. Are there any pictures of the set anywhere? She looks really pretty in the mirror one.

These picturres bring back many memories. There once was a time when I liked That Streisand Woman, and would stand outside that stage door waiting to get a glimpse of her. There was one time she arrived at 1:45 for a 2 PM matinee.

These days, however, I spit on the ground she walks on.

By the way, that picture up there could not be the stage door of the Winter Garden. It does not look like that. It appears to be an alternate exit.
