Hey there! a few years ago, when Claude-Michel Schonberg's (composer of lesmis, miss saigon, martin guerre, etc.) Ballet "Wuthering Heights" played in england, I emailed the ballet's production company and FirstNight records (that recorded all four boublil-schonberg musicals), and infomed them of vast public anticipation to hear the score. i also spread the word on such message boards as this, for people to do the same.
I don't know if it was MY initiation or not, but a double CD of the ballet was issued, and we all have another beautiful schonberg score available (If you love his musicals, the ballet is just as great!).
NOW, I am even MORE excited about THE PIRATE QUEEN, and the fact that it's sung-through. knowing boublil & schonberg's work, we all know, it;s going to be one helluva good show! I would love to have a complete recording of its score (in the vein of lesmis' and MS CSR, or Dessa rose's).
It is during this time in production, the producers might start thinking about a recording a cast album. let's strive to make it as complete as they can.
and hope for the show's safe and successful arrival to broadway and beyond.

THE DEVOTED BROADWAY FAN -WILL- SUCCEED!
Me too. I hate it when cast albums are cut down. ...or aren't released at all *cough* Lestat *cough*
I'm in if you think it'll help. Don't want to miss a note!

Based on the other cast recordings from Boublil and Schonberg, I bet we'll get the whole thing. How else would they decide to cut songs from the recording since it's completely sung through?

But the B & S CSRs didn't come out until their respective shows had been out for a few years (Les Miz: 1989; Miss Saigon: 1995) AND proven themselves a hit. I mean, look at Martin Guerre...

Good point! I didn't think of that.
I have sent the following email to the production company (riverdream) and the pirate queen website.
I URGE YOU ALL TO DO THE SAME, in order to get a cast recording as COMPLETE as possible.
Hello, My name is -MyName- and I wait eagerly towards "the Pirate Queen"s
opening on Broadway. I have always been a fan of Boublil and
Schonberg's musicals. and their latest musical, sounds as promising
and wonderful, as anything they've previously written.
I was very excited to hear that THE PIRATE QUEEN is a through composed
piece. I am sure that, like myself, many audience members, and
worldwide musical fans, would like to hear the show in it's entirety
outside the theatre as well as inside.
I would therefore like to suggest, that you give the Pirate Queen, the
same treatment, the Les Miserables and Miss Saigon scores got, with a
complete recording of the score, first note-to last
I am sure such a cast recording of the original Broadway cast (headed
by the talented Ms. Block) would benefit the show enormously, and make
very many musical fans out there VERY happy. don't let a beautiful new
schonberg-boublil score go unheard in full.
in any case, thanks for bringing this new show to Broadway!
Many thanks,
-MyName-
AGAIN, WE might make a difference. WRITE A SIMILAR LETTER TO BOTH EMAILS AND HOPE FOR THE BEST
I got a response from RIVERDREAM (profuction company of The Pirate Queen)!
a very short one, and without a signature of the writer.
but nevertheless, someone there read it.
I ENCOURAGE EVERYONE, to write similar emails to Riverdream, enquiring about a COMPLETE cast recording. and informing them of public desire.
Here is their response:
"Hi
Thanks for your email. I am sure there will be a cast recording in the
future however this will not be done for some time. Last night's first
preview of the show went very well with a standing ovation so hopefully
that means The Pirate Queen will be a big success!"
that's it. who wrote it (moya? some clerk? i dunno..)

I love sung-through shows. I can't wait for this one.

First of all, I second the motion to make bryan shut up.
Secondly,
"knowing boublil & schonberg's work, we all know, it;s going to be one helluva good show!"
Think again.
It hasn't even finished its out of town run, calm down guys.

I am calm. I saw the show and I stand by what I say.
ETA: Oops, were you talking to me? I'm so used to people telling me to stop being negative about the show that I may have prematurely jumped down your throat. I apologize if that wasn't directed at me.
There are many, many wonderful songs in this show, but IMHO the re-writing of "Because I am a Wife" to "The Woman I Was" was a big mistake. While I am still excited about an upcoming cast recording, just that change alone is enough to cut that excitement down considerably. If that change stays, I really feel audiences (and listeners) would be missing out.

Have you seen the show, DRSisLove? I've seen it twice, and have invested well over $200 in tickets, parking and that beautiful poster that I just couldn't resist. While I think that it's premature to trash a show that is just having it's initial workshops and readings for investors, the main purpose of an out of town tryout is to determine if the core elements of a show are any good. The Pirate Queen is now well over two years into its development, it's hardly an initial experimental reading we're discussing here. I keep seeing posts along the lines of yours, implying that no matter how lousy the book and the score of The Pirate Queen is, we should just trust that the creative team will get it all sorted out in time for a New York opening in March.
I'll just repeat what I've said probably too many times here. This show's book and about half of the score are broken beyond repair. If the producers don't bring in some new writers they might as well just have a big bonfire after the Chicago run closes and burn hundred dollar bills. It would be a wiser use of funds than bringing this show to Broadway.
The reason I won't shut up about this is that I think this is an incredible concept, and the bits of the show that work are so wonderful that I just hate to think of The Pirate Queen being another Lestat, running a few months and then disappearing forever.

I agree, Tech.
And I hate to be the negative one who's on every Pirate Queen thread saying that it's a bad show. But I don't think a lot of you have either 1.) seen it or 2.) been objective while seeing it. I think a lot of you are so excited about seeing Stephanie J. Block in her own show (and rightly so! She's a wonderful singer and performer.) that you miss out on a lot of the things that are wrong in this show. I can't imagine listening to a recording of The Pirate Queen at this stage because the songs are a shapeless mess, minus a few exceptions.
I saw the first preview of PQ on Oct. 3rd.
While I'll admit, I was excited to see Stephanie J. Block in her own show; I promised myself I would remain objective. I think I made good on that promise and was unbiased (save for Stephanie's actual performance).
Except for "Because I am a Wife" "I'll Be There" and "Sail to the Stars" I found that the first act dragged a bit. I did get bored a couple times. The overture itself was incredibly beautiful but very, very long. Interestingly enough it seemed there was an exact breaking point where it changed immediately from beautiful to long. From what I understand, they shortened, but to the point where it has been "butchered".
I really enjoyed the 2nd act. I left the theatre thinking that with some work, they would have one hell of a show on their hands. I, by absolutely no means, think part of it is broken beyond repair.

AM I CRAZY OR WHAT OR JUST EASILY PLEASED. I AM ON BROADWAY PRACTICALLY WEEKLY WHICH ADDS UP TO ALOT OF SHOWS-AND I LOVED PIRATE QUEEN,WILL SEE IT IN NYC AND CAN'T WAIT FOR THE SOUNDTRACK. WHATS WITH ALL THE NEGATIVITY?
Broadway Legend Joined: 5/10/05
First of all, it's not on Broadway yet, so you couldn't have seen it there. Unless you mean that you had seen it in Chicago and will see it once more in New York, in which case, you need to clarify.
Secondly, the negativity stems from all the reasons that we have previously stated. Read them. They're not hard to decipher.
Lastly, ALL CAPS HURTS THE EYES!
*edited for sweet clarity*
Of course when I say that the Pirate Queen book and half of the score can't be fixed without bringing in additional writing talent I'm just stating my opinion, based on having seen this show twice, and also having been a long time fan of Les Mis and Miss Saigon which I've seen dozens of times. I also watched repeated rewrites of "Martin Guerre" fail to save that from mediocrity. (I heard the UK tour was great, I didn't see it.) The whole Martin Guerre saga is what leads me to think additional writers are urgently needed.
There are others who post here who've seen The Pirate Queen and have loved it. Their opinions are just as valid as mine. I would never reply to a positive PQ review "Well, it's just in out of town previews. They might really screw it up by the time it gets to Broadway." I think it's completely valid for both positive and negative opinions of an out of town show tryout to be expressed.
I'm not interested in arguing the merits of The Pirate Queen with people who haven't seen it yet.
The critics will be reviewing this show in about a week. If you think I've been negative, just wait until you read what they have to say.
