Posted: 4/8/05 at 4:00pmI've said this in other threads - it's sad but true - if you get rejected from all other musical theatre schools except for the infamous AMDA, why scrounge around at the last minute for a musical theatre program? Obviously, if you don't have what it takes to get into a 4 year college program, what makes you think you have "what it takes" to make it professionally? People never cease to surprise me...

Actually darling, I'm 19 years old, applied to 9 schools for musical theatre and got into all 9.
I didn't mean it in a mean way - it's honesty.

"Hi maybe i didnt make it to the 4yr colleges cuz i spent so much time in high school on performing and not caring about grades"
It's nice that you love performing, but grades are half the battle. If you slack off on your schoolwork, don't expect to be rewarded for it.

Posted: 4/8/05 at 4:14pmAnd, with most theatre schools, if your talent is truly remarkable your grades don't matter.
#8re: PLEASE RESPOND!!!!
Posted: 4/8/05 at 4:14pmYou're not going to get into ANY good theatre school if you aren't at least a little bit smart.

Sometimes you have to suck it up and go somewhere even if you didnt get into the MT major, and try out at a later date.
Thats what I am doing...

Posted: 4/8/05 at 4:15pmUnfortunately, talent doesn't mean much nowadays. Don't throw your life away expecting and expecting AND expecting things to go your way.

Talent doesn't mean much? Maybe that's true because, after all, aren't YOU studying theatre in college?
But no, in all seriousness, how the hell would you know how much talent matters in theatre schools? You're incredibly wrong in thinking that it doesn't mean much. It means a lot. If you're amazing, you'll get in anywhere regardless of your grades.

what a great message! "hey, kids, blow off school, because if you can sing and dance, you don't need to know how to do ANYTHING else!"
Anyway, as someone REJECTED from AMDA, I'm currently in the same type of situation as you, Broadwaystage, and i'm waiting to hear from Marymount Manhattan...Best of luck to you, and I KNOW we'll both make it!

BroadwayStage05, Don't listen to munk...
As one who has attended college in a musical theatre program and arts camps, I can say that just because people get accepted to these things doesnt mean they're amazing....and people who don't have theatre degrees become successful actors all the time. After seeing the crap that went on in MY MT program, I left to get an English degree with a theatre minor, and am doing just fine now in my career.
Your life/career is not over if you don't go to college for Musical Theatre. :)
Hugs and Encouragement
Munk, get over yourself/it.

Get over myself? Actually, after this semester I'm not going to be studying musical theatre anymore because I just don't have "it" to devote my life to being an actor and getting no where.
It's true- and it's undeniable. IF YOU GET REJECTED FROM EVERY COLLEGE THEATRE PROGRAM, WHAT MAKES YOU THINK THAT YOU HAVE WHAT IT TAKES TO MAKE IT PROFESSIONALY?!! WAKE UP!

Okay...as someone waaaay older than all of you, if you have been accepted somewhere based on your talent and/or grades, that's wonderful. If you have not been accepted somewhere and this is still what you want, don't give up. There are always alternatives and to tell anyone (especially someone still in high school) that they CANNOT succeed...well, I just don't think anyone should be saying that to anyone. Many years ago, I sat in on an acting class taught by a broadway professional (in NYC to actors of varying degrees of success). It was brought up that day that every single person in the room, including the teacher, had been told by someone that they wouldn't succeed.
That said, if you can't get into a school you want now, look for other options - a year at whatever school you can get into (even community college) to get the grades required to transfer, and take acting classes elsewhere in the evenings or get/stay involved in community theater. If you can get into a college you like, but not in theater, try getting in with a different major (or undeclared, if that's an option), take some general courses, focus on getting the grades where they need to be.
If it's really what you want, find ways to work on it. You just have to start approaching it from other angles since your first plan didn't work out.

I never said she wouldn't succeed. All I said was, if you can't get into college programs, what makes you think you can do this professionally.
I said this a month ago in a different thread and a bunch of people agreed with me.

Don't all of the AMDA students complete their 4 year BFA program at the Actors Studio, which is part of the New School University?
...at least, that's what my friend at AMDA told me.

Munk...I love the fact that you are so sure of yourself at such a young age. But as you will see as you age, it benefits you more to help people than to put them down. Reading your posts make me worried about the future of this GREAT way of life. I suggest for the betterment of the stage...reconsider your attitude or become a lawyer.

I'd say Munk that I didn't get into DePaul but got into UA which may not be well known but they only took 9 of us into Musical Theatre outta 250 so it might be their program. I wasn't right for DePaul's Acting program but I'm fitting in well to the Musical Theatre program here in Tucson and have the privelege of being the only freshman in Rocky Horror as a replacement. If you really wanna do musical theatre broadwaystage, you can take a year off, work etc. work on your performing and go out and audition for schools next Jan, Feb. etc. Good luck with everything. I've got a good friend that did AMDA in NYC and he is currently on tour w/ a Gershwin show. Just keep lookin' on the positive side, it'll all work out for the best

Here's the deal, there is not one way to do anything. Everyone has their own specific path towards their goal. The best thing a person could do as a performer is to become a person, the more life experience you have, the better performer you are. You can take voice lessons, you can take dance lessons, you can taking acting classes, but ultimately it's YOU that you bring to the table. If you can figure that out at your age, you will be far ahead of all the kids graduating from these musical theatre programs. Just because you don't go to one of these schools (which a lot of them are crap anyway), doesn't mean that there aren't resources available to you. It's beneficial also to go to a regular college and star in all the shows and gain a ton of experience. That's valuable too. Maybe more valuable then constant heady evaluation of technique. In experience, you learn technique as well, because you have to.
Find the solution that makes your life good, that allows you to grow -- rather than trying to get into your 30th choice school.
Don't lose sight of how many performers on B'way didn't go to one of these schools AND how many people who have gone to these schools who have never gotten to B'way.
