Can we also just address the question: what constitutes a hit musical OF OLD?
Somehow a show that premiered within the last 25 years (no matter how brilliant) doesn't really qualify, does it? I'm talking to you, CITY OF ANGELS, CRAZY FOR YOU, and KISS OF THE SPIDERWOMAN.
Just a question of nomenclature, not criticism of those beloved shows.
Actually I'd like to see one of the lesser known or less successful Ethel Merman vehicles revived. Like Subaru was a lady, panama Hattie, or Call Me Madam.

CARNIVAL totally gets my vote. 50 years since its original production, it is still a beautiful show, great for adults and families and certain to be successful again, given the right production. An amazing workshop at Roundabout some years ago, with Sarah Uriarte Berry as Lili and Howard McGillin as Paul, should have led to a full production. Great score by Bob Merrill, who is sadly forgotten today, although his work in the 50s and 60s (Take Me Along and New Girl in Town) was terrific.
I'm one of those people who most often prefers a new director's and/or choreographer's take on a musical being revived. Only a few times do I wish the original staging to be replicated. Such is the case with Tommy Tune's original and amazing staging of A DAY IN HOLLYWOOD/A NIGHT IN THE UKRAINE. I'd love for younger audiences to see that show as it was originally done on Broadway (Tune greatly re-conceived it from the first UK mounting).
I don't think shows that opened in my lifetime should be considered "of old". I was expecting more of a "Golden Age" list

We must have different Gods. My God said "do to others what you would have them do to you". Your God seems to have said "My Way or the Highway".
Ever since the Kennedy Center Honors for Chita I've wanted to hear Donna Murphy sing more of Kiss of the Spider Woman's score. But couldn't imagine that actually being too interesting in practice and can't imagine Murphy taking any revival other than Mame. Still really interested in the music though and I think that Bebe Neuwirth would be fabulous as Aurora.
"Brigadoon": Since Broadway's bringing back the classics, why not bring back one that brings us back to happy memories of an old classic love story with a fantasy twist?
I was lucky to attend that gorgeous Broadway production of BRIGADOON in 1980-81 several times. All-around great show, rather ahead of its time. It starred the wonderful Meg Bussert, and Laura Benanti's father, Martin Vidnovic -- both musical, romantic leading actors at the top of their game in those days.
