I think the show ran longer than a few people thought. It had a good run.

^I had the same thought. It's a large cast, so the running costs might be high. But then, if they're going to recoup soon, then why not try to replace.
I imagine they can't find tv stars who want to follow-up Sean and Kristin. They might not be brilliant in the show, but they are certainly names for people in television.

Posted: 9/16/10 at 8:27pmThey may try to recoup by taking the show on tour. They will need some star power to sell, but this show should do great on the road.

A few reasons for closing:
1. They're well on their way to recouping, and don't want to risk bringing in new stars.
2. Neil Meron and Craig Zadan are also producing How to Succeed in the spring and apparently don't want to have two 60's office comedies competing for an audience.
3. Sister Act wants the theatre.

I think that this had a very healthy run. I loved it when I saw it, despite a few problems. It was an incredibly fun night. I am glad to see that they will recoup soon.
On a side note, I really hope Sister Act takes this theater!!

Posted: 9/17/10 at 12:16amI just got back from tonight's performance. I called a friend at intermission to say that the orchestra was not filled up (I moved from the rear mezz down to orchestra at intermission) and that the mezz was just barely 30% full and that the closing announcement was not too far behind. My friend then told me that 5 minutes before they just announced the closing...the cast learned that after the show tonight.

I'm not really sad that I won't be able to see this. The score is good, but the premise just doesn't excite me.
On the upswing, I'm to the stage door on Flea Market day to get my CD signed after the matinee.

"this makes no sense to me, if they are going to recoup, why are they closing? they seem to be doing fine."
Yes, Promises is currently doing good business, but what will happen after the new year? A lot of shows take a hit after the holidays. Not to mention, a show like this relies on star power, and the leads cannot keep renewing their contracts. I think it is smart of them to go off on a high note. Just because a show recoups its investment doesn't mean they should be barred from closing. It isn't random; it's a smart move.
