Pantoland Approaches!

With panto season just a month away it's time to get buying on those tickets. What's everybody here planning to see, and does anybody want to accompany an American on his whirlwind visits to at least four shows this season?

So far I'm aiming for:
Hackney Empire (Mother Goose w/ Clive Rowe)
Stratford East (Hansel & Gretel)
Richmond (Peter Pan w/ Bonnie Langford & Simon Cowell)
Wimbledon (Cinderella w/ er...someone)

And hopefully there'll be a Dick Whittington or Aladdin nearby as well.

In the nicest possible way, exy, my first thought at this thread was that there's something a little bit wrong with you. re: Pantoland Approaches!

I do like pantomimes, but I rarely go out of my way to see them, and I have no plans to see any this season. Although if my family say "hey, shall we panto?" then I'm IN.

I found an old pantomime programme in our basement storage yesterday. 'Cinderella' starring Lionel Blair, Rod Hull & Emu, Liza Goddard, and - in the title role - a very very young-looking girl by the name of Denise Outen. Needless to say, I LOLed. re: Pantoland Approaches!

It took you this long to work that out? And only a little bit wrong? Wow.

OK exedore, you've intrigued us. What is pantomime all about? Is it nursery rhymes sans Disney? Campy fun? Suitable for tweens? Suitable for adults?

We're New Yorkers, so the English language is a problem for us. If lorry = truck and Skins = Gossip Girl, then pantomime = ?

re: Pantoland Approaches!

Panto' is traditionally performed at Christmas but never rarely mention christmas in the storyline!, mainly aimed at kids and familys. Panto is now a popular (or not in some cases lol) a form of theatre and features song, dance, more glitter than liberaces wardrobe, bit of slapstick and mild innuendo.
The traditional storys are all based around fairy tales and have been adapted many ways over the years.

Aladdin (Not Disney)
Babes in the Wood (which often turns into Robin Hood)
Beauty and the Beast
Cinderella
Dick Whittington
Jack and the Beanstalk
Peter Pan
Sleeping Beauty
Snow White

Lots Of Typical Conventions too : The principal boy (depending) is often played by a girl, The Older Woman (Panto Dame) Is always a man in drag, Lots of double entendre in lines which goes over the kids heads completely. Audience Participation Nation - Feel free to shout "He's Behind You" "Oh No It Isn't" "Oh Yes It Is" and Boo & hissing the baddie. The Good fairy should always enter from Stage Right and The Baddie Stage Left..... God you have to love panto!

I absolutely ADORE panto!
Did 8 or 9 and loved every hard working second of them!
They are nowhere near what they used to be these days- the producers have no idea anymore!
Bring back the Palladium pantos thats what I say!
Clark I keep on forgetting its 'you' when I see that name! I wish you had chosen something like 'MagicMatcham'!
Hope your well? x

re: Pantoland Approaches!

well i was stuck for a name so used my own name instead (and i wasn't that creative to think of another name!)

I love panto!! I've done 3 (4th this year) and its always a blast - i don't think i've ever done one show thats been the same.. the one i'm doing this year has two possible endings which the audience vote for! (heaven forbid) - you also get the best adlibs in panto too IMHO...

When i did aladdin, in the laundry scene, twanky but wishee washee in the wahsing machine set it off....it was the first preview...a HUGE (and i mean huge) maroon was set off in the washing machine and everybody in the wings leapt about three foot off the floor... Widow Twankey then adlibbed...

"Bloomin Heck Wishee...i know that working in a laundry i'm use to touching cloth but that was too close..."

We all were keeled over in our end of act one costumes in the wings, in stiches of laughter - then obviously with the unnanoucned arrival of the marroon - the fire alarms wern't swithced off so we were all evacuated into the car park.. Needless to sya - the Adlib was then written into the script for opening night!
Happy times!
