They just wrapped their press conference:
Hairspray
Les Miserables
Spelling Bee
A Funny Thing Happened On The Way To The Forum
Curtains
rather kick-ass, I say!

Wow! A MILLION times better than this season. Are they not doing a play?
I actually want to see all of those. Good season.

The standard M.O. seems to be a play mid-season, and in lieu of that they're doing Spelling Bee.
But overall - an incredibly strong season with a lot of potential for some serious awesome talent. I'll be curious to see how much of the production design, staging, etc. is new, since it's almost all newer shows.

Best season they've had in a LONG time. So thrilled, especially as an artist once affiliated with the company.
This should definitely help along with some of the financial problems they've been having.

Posted: 2/19/10 at 2:11pmI'm actually kind of excited. Maybe I'll actually make some of these trips to see shows instead of going to the city all the time.

Posted: 2/19/10 at 2:50pmAm I gonna have to be the party pooper and say "didn't most of these shows JUST close on Broadway?!?!" I mean I know Papermill has to make money so they don't find themselves in the financial dire straits they were in a year or two ago. At least do shows that AREN'T currently touring.

Of course many of them just closed on Broadway.
You'd be surprised how many Papermill subscribers never go to see shows on Broadway - because New York City is a big, scary place filled with people who look different from them.

We're talking about Essex County, NJ, not rural Mississippi. Don't be over-dramatic.

I live in NJ, and have seen all of these shows on Broadway, for the most part not all that long ago, but it will be cool to see them here on the regional.
I hope many of you share my desires and come up and support them.

I am a Paper Mill subscriber and also see several plays in NYC. The Paper Mill Playhouse almost always has quality productions, often better than the Broadway production. They have presented a very strong lineup for the upcoming season and I'm very excited about it.
As far as the quoted remarks about people in NJ being afraid to come to NYC, you need to leave the city once in a while to see what's around you. Essex County, NJ is one of the most diverse places you could find anywhere in the U.S.

Jon, I have to respectfully disagree with you - I work for a small theatre company here in Manhattan and an overwhelming number of our subscribers come into New York from, you guessed it, New Jersey. More so than from Long Island or Westchester, and about equal to our Upper East and Upper West Side subscriber base combined. So from my particular vantage point, the numbers belie your assertion.
Back to Papermill - sounds like a good season. I might even leave Manhattan for a few of them.

There's a definite contingent of New Jerseyans who just can't be arsed to go to NYC at all, and I really don't get them, but you know what? I don't think that waiting until Broadway shows hit the Paper Mill is such a bad thing. It's just a different experience - no insane traffic into the city, none of the other ancillary expenses associated with The Full Broadway Evening. Plus the ticket prices are lower and you're supporting regional theater.
As a single student who can easily go eight hours without eating, I can rush a show relatively cheaply, and I do that about ten times a year. But I still go to Paper Mill, too, (and the Arden, and the Wilma) because when they're on they can be quite awesome.
Anyway, way to go Paper Mill! And damn you, NJTransit, you will have yet more of my paltry savings.
